Ninja Back Box
well after 12 months of 04STI ownership, I am finally getting the bug!
I am pining for a new exhaust. Nothing too noisy, but something to let that meaty burble out and hopefully release a few horses!
I have read loads of favourable comments on the Ninja back box, and I am definitely hankering towards this.
The question is should I pay the extra for the cat back system?
Scoobyworld are offering the two at a very reasonable looking price, but I need to understand the benefit of purchasing the cat back rather than just the back box.
Can anyone enlighten me with pros/cons, BHP figures etc?
Thanks.

Why the Ninja and de-cat???
1. Looks the danglies.
2. Importantly, fantastic sound, top flat four burble, not to intrusive, neighbours.
3. Made my MY99 much more eager, felt quicker and all round responses were better. Fit a performance panel and it really does seem to fly +20/25 bhp.
4. You know you want to

Hi Mate,
I was in a similar dilema about what box to go for, changing from my WR sport one.
After reading loads of posts on pro & cons I just ended up totally confuesd, it all depends on what you want I suppose. I wanted that burble that was unmistakeably a scooby coming round the corner, you wouldnt need to look behind you to know it was a scooby.
But then i didnt want it so loud it would do my head in on long journeys or wouldnt be able to hear stereo over it, not that i bought it for that anyway .
But then didnt want to end up with a car that i bought to drive to enjoy, but end giving myself a headache and pi55 the neighbours off so make excuses not to use it late or night/early morning, rolling in with the engine off etc, as i heard some poeople put in posts.
I whent for the Ninja, it is getting fitted tommorrow ... hope i made the right choice.. will report back tommorrow
I was going to go for the centre pipe deal as well, but thought would see how this goes first then add either the ninja or afterburner section

Why the Ninja and de-cat???
Are you saying that you went for the full de-cat & panel filter which gave 20/25BHP, or does it just feel that way?
Mutts Nutts - Please do report back, as I am curious to see how you find it both in terms of sound and performance.
Scooby World are also doing a deal on panel filters.
Does anyone out there have a view on these? Are they money well spent?

Something is nagging at me inside now that says i should have got the full system
I may be back to scoobyworld for the rest of the system, but going to see how I get on this with just the BB first.
A report will be in here tommorrow on sound / performance

I have the Ninja on my Wagon, just the back box and the JR panel filter,
which came as a deal.
The Ninja is quality, fantastic burble on cruise and tickover but when you
hit the loud pedal it roars.
The panel filter also makde a difference, the car seemed more agile and free revving.
You will not be dissapointed.

Mine (04 wagon)...
a) Lovely sound, though not too loud
b) Shines up a treat
c) Well made and excellent VFM
d) With the cat back system it'll be a fair bit louder, and you should get a few more horses
e) On the 03 onwards cars I think the Ninja sits too low on the hangers. From the side it looks comfortable, but from the rear it just looks a little out of place
All in all I can't really fault mine. Just make sure you give it a damn good polish before fitting!
I'll probably move on to an HKS 'Super Dragger' when I'm done with the Ninja.

This was the first mod i had done and with the standard exhaust and a Ninja it has a lovely sound which is not to loud, i then had the uppipe & downpipe cats removed and it was slightly louder but not to much (even on a wagon) , now i've just had the last cat removed and that has made a big difference, it's quite a bit louder but the car pulls a lot better

I agree, think my ninja is just perfect.
All i wanna know is how you all keep them so shiny in the pics. Mine is actually looking like rust developing on the lip edge but i'm sure its just exhaust cr@p.

I have to agree with the comments made by everyone before, very well built, sounds excellent, and looks excellent
Not too noisey either, mind I was shocked how much you could hear it from outside the car, I let my younger brother have a go in it the other day,
it sounded fantastic as he pulled away, I even heard him get back and I was in doors at my folks house
Wouldn't want to go much louder than that TBH !!
Have to say mine has what appears to be a bit of rust on the lip edge too

Hi guys - Just following up on the 'rust' issue that a couple of you have reported. The Ninja is constructed of stainless steel and should not suffer from any rust issues. However what you find on any stainless exhaust after a while is some surface discolouration (spelling!) which does look rust-like. Any metal polish will be able to remove this kind of build up from the exhaust very easily. I have just done this on my own Apexi exhaust on my own car which again is stainless. Glad you are happy with the exhaust.

Guys
It's not rust... it's some sort of tarnish or oxidization. I've raised this with Neil from Scoobyworld and that's what he's told me. The Ninja is made from 403 stainless, so It'll not rust.
[sad_mode=on]
As for keeping it clean...
a) Get under the car to do it properly!
b) Try to get any large gritty deposits off the Ninja before washing it
c) Wash the Ninja with the same stuff you use on the car. (A mild solution of washing up liquid works OK)
d) Make sure you wash the BB and the pipe to the centre. Remember... the view from behind a Subaru is most striking by it's shiny drooping exhaust pipe
e) Rinse it off well
f) Dry it properly
g) Use a decent polish on it. I give mine a couple of coats of MER every time I wash the car. Use the MER with a bit of elbow grease and the 'rust' type marks will go.
[/sad_mode=off]
I know the above sounds crazy, but my Ninja has now been on for 13 months and still looks new
As stated in True Grip.... "The Squadron Leader has the shiniest pipe in the land"

Just been out for a blat in it .. Grin factor 10
I give it the to Scoobyworld.
Lovely burble, much more so than the WR Sport and amazingly not any difference inside that i noticed. I agree with everything everybody said, with the air filter as well it seesm to have transformed that car, it does seem to beathe a lot better and much better throttle repsonse.
With the windows down you can really hear it sing when it gets at the higher revs, and can hear the turbo whistle and come alive, so much more tahn before, this may be tye placebo effect off course .
Its louder than my WR Sport pipe, but not too loud or obtrusive and looks the dogs danglies
The real test is get the mrs to drive it up the road so I can hear it
