Cool Shell Optimax Or BP Ultimate?

Wot one does everyone use? and is there a big difference between the two for performance to the car?

Just wondering as since i have owned turbo cars i have always used Shell Optimax. Have put one tank of BP Ultimate in one of my cars but thought it was poo! Prob beacause i only gave it one tank!

Thanks

Adz

Only ever tried one tank of BP, due to the fact I, ahem, seriously undrerstimated the amount of fuel left and happened to be spluttering up to a BP station Seemed OK but I guess it's hard to tell on 1 tank!

Otherwise been Optimax for nearly a year and it's been great. Just trying Tesco 99 at the moment, on my second tank full and it seems as good as Optimax and cheaper to boot.

Standard Super Unleaded was always 97 RON. Then Shell brought out Optimax at 98 RON. I was told - but I cannot verify - that BP Ultimate was 99 RON. I'm not sure if this is right tho as I've tried it having used Optimax since owning my first Cossie 4 years ago, and Optimax definately feels better than Ultimate. I've also tried the new Tesco 99 RON Super more recently in my WRX, and I rate that the same as Optimax. IMO Ultimate is ok tho - but only if you've no choice!

Ultimate is £1.03.9/L near me. Utter rip-off IMO and they've had the nerve to tie on a tag that says 'Try Me'

Tesco was 96.9 the last time I got some.

Can you please clear soemthing up for me:
I have a new wrx 300.
I have filled itmup once only on Optimax but if I am stuck and cannot get to a shell then I see BPO ultimtae seems pretty cool. If not this then what about the normal Sup[rme unleaded as most esso's etc which is 97 ron? What would this do to my car?
I'm bloody confused to the whole situation.
Please helppppppppppppppp.

Personally, with modded MY97, mapped on Optimax + Millers o/b preference goes:

1 Tesco 99
2 Shell Optimax
3 Esso SUL

BP doesn't appear on the list as it lights up the Knocklink without fail.

BP ultimate is 97 as are all other SUL's. Optimax is nominally 98 but allegedly actually 98.6 and guess what Tesco 99 is ..... yep you guessed it 99.

I'll stick with Optimax thank you very much.

Gotta agree....after just 1/4 tank first time i've used Tesco99 the car seems to be a bit smoother and more responsive and the economy seems to be up a little as well

A UK car should run perfectly well on UL, mine certainly did. If you want to put SUL or Optimax in you can...it will be better.
If it's mapped for optimax 98 that's what it needs or better.

My cars mapped for 98 ron but as Tesco 99 is more widely available and cheaper i've been using it for two weeks with no knocklink activity. Can't say it's any better then optimax. Weather is cooler in the evenings now so the car runs better anyway.

However, last night filled up with Tesco 99 and a bottle of Millers Octane booster...car probably has about 101 ron in its tank......big difference.

Not tried optimax yet but in order of preference

Esso sul
Total sul
BP ultimate
Asda // Morrison as last resort

dont know the octane rating of the total sul but my car felt perkier when using that than any other fuel tried before. I would have that as my number 1 but the esso station is a few miles closer so I generally go there. BP ultimate if I need fuel on the way home from work as there is one situated close by. My car is a my92 jdm

I noticed that Tesco's 99 is similar to Optimax as well.

Could be the colder weather, but I find it more difficult to get the first knocklink light flashing when I went for a blast yesterday.

Only on my first tank, but looking good. Will see how it performs in conjunction with the TD04 hybrid going on today :-)

Both seem to be better than BP Ultimate, which had the first knocklink light flashing in fifth, going up a slight hill - which could have been the fuel map adjusting. Didn't get the same behaviour with Tescos 99.

Optimax every time. Put BP ultimate in once due to it being the only petrol staion around and the knock link was lighting up like a christmas tree
