Caught doing 44mph in a 30mph limit: What to expect
As above, i've just received a NIP for 44mph in a 30mph zone. Does anyone have any idea of what i'll get? There is no mention of the penalty in the Notice of Intended prosecution.
I'm holding my hands up to this, but I need to drive for my job and its a bit worrying.
Before I get jumped i'd like to say in my defence that the road was a single carriageway, with embankments both sides, previously a 50 limit, and the only way you could hit a pedestrian on this road is if they parachuted in. No excuse I know, but at least it wasn't through a school playground.

Road angel. Good idea. Must remember to put the one I have back in the bl00dy car! DOH!
Can't moan I suppose. What are the chances though. I've done about 300000miles since I passed my test and the first time I speed I get caught.

Yup, straightforward £60 and 3 pointer for that...and an SP30 on your licence will barely even register on your insurance premium so don't worry about it...
My sister works for Zurich and she says that when they get claims in and people have failed to declare an SP30 they still pay out cos it's considered so minor....i don't suggest you risk it as it's technically an offence of gaining a pecuniary advantage by deception (ie lower premium by deceiving them that you have no conviction) which carry's a maximum penalty of 10 years on indictment!!

To get done at 44 your speedo would have been reading nearer to 46 or 47 its so easy to slip over the limit by a few MPH but a reading of 46/47 is a bit more than just an accidental silp, should be just the usual £60 + 3 points I would think, good luck though.

i think general rule is less an 20 mph over the limit is 3 points and £60. between 20 and 30 mph over the limit is 6 points and a more hefty fine, and any more than 30mph over the limit you are looking at a ban of some length (unless your famous - then you will be asked for an autograph and given a escort to whereever you are going)

its about time they made 40+ in a 30 9 points +... then ********* will stop doing it in our 30 limit, or any 30 limit for that matter! me being someone who's seen what happens when a kid gets hit in a 30 limit... and it wasn't nice... at all... made me change my outlook on the subject completly...
NO ESCUSE if you don't know your doing 40+ in a 30 then you probably need driver training or at least a shopping car.

have you every driven through bainton (30mph) in yorkshire? not got a problem at doing 30 when people are about through this wide village, but 45 at 4.30 in the morning feels quite sedate and safe. buts not my point. as you leave bainton heading towards malton they've changed what was a 60 to a 40, its a virtually straight half of a mile country road leading to a round about, with the only hazard an approx 30 meter long off the road layby that starts at the 30 zone. it would of been better to extend the 30 zone to include both ends of the layby, thus slower sooner (as alot of people only slow once past the signs) and slower for the only hazard on that section of the road. but instead they put the whole of the country road at 40 which is natually too slow, which leads to poeple having less respect for speed limits.

As the old adage goes, its not speed that kills, its innapropriate speed. 70 on the motorway at 4am on a sunny summers morning is too slow, 30 on the same stretch in the middle of a snowstorm with freezing fog all around is too fast!
By the way, unlucky pete, 3 points and £60 by the sound of it m8
What got you anyway? Gatso or mobile?
chris.
ps, next time, stay behind barnesy

It was a camera van Chris.
Dazza: As I said, the only way the road I got done on could be a 30 to protect kids etc. is if they parachute in. 2 roundabouts, 1 mile between em, embankments both sides. Very recently it was a 50.
I DON'T EVER speed in towns, villages, school playgrounds! etc.
And yes, I was aware I was speeding. Accelerating off a roundabout, clocked the van, slowed down..........too late.
I'll keep hold of the NIP for a couple of weeks before sending. Delay the innevitable for a while.

47 in a 30.....
I was caught by by local traffic officers doing 47 in a 30,i held my hands up and said yes sir no sir, it was my first speeding ticket ever,in 15 years driving (and i do drive fast, cut my teeth on a v6 rover 800 at 18! and driving quick cars since), But two points here, i was caught on a stretch of road that is very wide, very long and there were no houses along it, it just happend to be between villages and rather than have a national limit in between they just continued the 30, a real speed trap! as i said i do drive fast, but only when safe to do so, the second point here is this, the copper told me it was up to his discrection whether i got a fixed penalty 3 pointer and £60 fine or whether i should go to court, after he had gave me the ticket he told me if i had been mouthy or argumentitive in any way i'd have been going to court, twice the points and twice the fine at least!
So if you do get pulled, be nice! might save you a fortune! lol
Just one more point, i like many others i guess didnt tell my insurance about my run in with the law until i renewed, the bloke gave me a bollocking saying my insurance wasent valid for the previous 6 months and my premium went up £40 just like that....
