What percentage of Turbo MY99 cars have aircon?
as title above,
When I was looking for an impreza (April-May 05), I looked at about 5-6 cars before I bought, and only one of them had aircon. I was told that it was a fairly pricey option at the time, therefore many owners decided not to go for it. Are there any other reasons for this (i.e. fuel consumption, weight saving etc?).
What proportion would have a/c? A look on autotrader doesnt throw much with a/c.
I eventually got one without it, though am thinking now that I should have held out for one with, its a blessing on the motorway on a hot day!!
Just curious I guess?
Thanks for any info...

It was an optional extra on the Classic, around £1000-£1500 IIRC. Dealer fit option and can be retrofitted for the same price though not sure if you would find a dealership prepared to fit it to a classic these days.
When I was looking for mine (MY00) I wanted one with air-con and tracked one down okay, I would say at least a third of them have it. Must make it easier to sell on secondhand as most people want it and it's seen as a desirable option. One of those things once you have had it you never want to go back to a non-air conditioned car.
Yes it does add a bit of weight. Does affect the performance a bit though you can switch it off. The pulley has a clutch which allows it to be disengaged, the system does this if you stick you foot down, it disengages giving you the power back.
Fuel consumption, does make a bit of difference but then apparently the drag created by a open sunroof or windows is almost as detrimental.

thanks for the replies, I can make do without it, but my previous cars have always had it, so kinda got used to having it.
True I can wind down the window, but at motorway speeds makes it difficult to talk/listen to music, and gets a bit noisy. But no thats no complain compared to the joys that this car gives me on a daily basis!!!!!
Thanks again...

You'll notice it not being there if you've had it on other cars - much better on the motorway as the car is pretty noisy if you have the windows open even a little bit.
I know that on pre 98 cars it wasnt standard, and not that many seem to have it, the one I bought did which was just luck really.

I'm told that wearing a jumper in a MY99 makes the MAF fail!

My MY97 has aircon!
I always had the "just open the window" approach. Unil I got aircon in a pug 306.
I'm so glad it's in the scooby. I also drive a bog standard Polo during the week and it's gets too warm to be comfortable. Often I'll take the scooby out if it's warm during the week.
Don't notice much difference in petrol consuption with it switched on either

The wife's Yaris has it, and so I swore I would buy something with aircon this time, hence I bought a WRX wagon.
I basically ruled out UK cars entirely, as most of the ones at the right price didn't have aircon, whereas every WRX did. Plus electric folding mirrors are beyond cool LOL

Probably a degree in theoretical fettling somewhere though.
I think fettling is best learned "on the job".

talking of the bright switch (which you werent but hey!)...what sort of nonsense is that all about? a whole lighting circuit and all the crap and development that went into a switch that turns the clock brighter or duller..is that for bloody real? only had my car a week and still dont believe thats all that switch does, sure it must have a secret practical or performance geared application that i have yet to fine!
