a mate of mine took me out in his uk impreza the other day. It was VERY impressive, particularly on set off when he floored it and basically side stepped the clutch. The acceleration in 1st and 2nd was phenominal.

Problem was that the car was cutting out in the higher gears, turned out that the wastegate actuator mechanism was blocked and the car was over boosting and so cutting out.

What i want to know is what boost level does the engine cut out? It wasnt cutting out in the first couple of gears so i was wondering what sort of power he was getting with the higher boost levels. This would explain the stoopendous acceleration!!

cheers, bren

Hi Bren.
The boost limit on UK cars generally comes into effect at approx 16-17psi, though if his wastegate thingy is blocked it may obviously be cutting out before this point is actually reached.

Stef.
PS And no, we're not scared of ya!

Boost cut on a 99/00 UK is about half a second over 18psi.

If you are hitting more than 18psi in 1st/2nd then i would imagine that in higher gears the car would be undriveable cos of the boost cutout - 4th/5th put much more load on the engine and generally create more boost.
