Default Whooshing sound ?

Excuse my ignorance, but can anyone tell me what's going on under the bonnet of my 05 WRX PPP every couple of minutes when it makes the sound of 'sucking' air or 'blowing' it out. It's my first turbo/intercooler car and I presume it's to do with that.
Cheers Barney.

Is it a continuos sort of noise where u can hear a mild hissing sound. Then i gather it is ure induction kit

Unless you hear the sound when u let go of throttle and end up with a brrrrrrrrmmmm psshhhhhh noise. Then that is ure dump valve

Could be the Ambi-Pure purge kit that comes with the PPP, maybe the exhaust bearing capacitator?

It's continues for a couple of seconds like you say, a mild hissing noise, when just driving normally, every couple of minutes. It does not appear to be linked to acceleration/letting go of throttle.

Ignore this mate. Silly nonsense designed to make me feel superior. It didn't...just a bit guilty.

I personally think its ure induction kit unless pslewis has a suggestion you can consider also. But with that i would expect a little hesitation in the drive

brand new car, lot of money, .... did you not test drive the car to see if you liked it first??!!! - You kind of notice noises like that immediately especially when not had a turbo'd lump under there before.

If it didnt make a load of fatastically strange whooshing sounds etc I would be worried lol. Its part of the cars charm.

Try standing at the front of the car while it is idling and listen for it,I think it is the aircon.Turn the aircon off and have another listen ,I bet it stops. If so this is normal so dont worry.

Thought it was from the turbo/dump valve, until i drove a gx non-turbo which does the same thing, so i asked a technition and yes it is the air-con system venting etc etc.

Hello barney, glad to see that you are enjoying your new purchase, dont forget about your 1k service mind. Daniel

It is the liquid refrigerant valve opening and it then goes into the heat exchanger which cools the air and changes the state of the refrigerant into gas as it returns to the compressor. A temp sensor after the evaporator senses the temp and if too warm the liquid valve opens more, this is the wooshing you hear.

All turbo'd cars have dump valves - how else does the pressure get out?

I posted a little while ago about a strange noise - which went on and off every 30 seconds or so for about 5 seconds, most on here decided it was the air con and i'm happy with that explanation.

I also posted about being able to hear the whoooosh on a PPPd wrx, possibly due to the increased pressures generated. I can clearly hear the blow off valve on my MY05 when i lift off although it is not as loud as the aftermarket atmospheric dump valves.

Perfect timing there Pete. I was just thinking, "what for it pslewis is bound to say the MAF" and there it was. LOL !!!!

My thoughts anyway- it's the Aircon, mine does it too. Switch it off, go for a drive, sweat your Boll*cks off with the windows shut and see if it still does it.

Why keep suggesting that its a silly 'induction kit' when the thread starter said clearly that is a new '05 STI? The whoosh noise will be the re-circ dumpvalve.
