If its a simple oil change and check-over then do it yourself or pay £200 at Subaru Dealer.

If its a bigger one - then it depends upon your skills ....... can you take an engine apart if needed?

The BIG service costs £650 at the dealer

Here's my limited experience:

Local Scooby dealer 75 quid an hour plus vat. Average job done but they failed to spot a failed lamda.

XtremeScoobies in Boreham, Kent 45 quid an hour plus vat, free coffee, a thorough check over everything, courtesy clean-up, detailed fault find but absolutely no hard sell whatsoever.
Me: Gearbox in and out easy enough, change rear diff oil easy enough, sort trim rattles and change oils easy enough, but anything technical that can involve a big bill, no thanks. Better, IMO, to pay an enthusiast (Xtreme for example) to do the job).

Plenty of independants who'll do a better job for less cash.

Scoobyclinic, Prosport, TSL, Powerstation, ExtremeScoobys.....tell us all where you live and someone will recommend the best local one

Edited to add :- Most independants will stamp your service book, and enthusiasts will respect that as much if not more than dealer stamps, knowing that the jobs may have been done better.

Dunno if I'll get booted for advertising here but.....

My old engine went bang because of the failed lamda. I found a new, secondhand one in a breakers. But before that, I rang round everywhere for quotes for a rebuild.

TSL, GG, RC quoted phone numbers for prices.

Gibsons of Brock were cheap for parts if I wanted to rebuild it myself (which is borderline possible for me).

XtremeScoobies could have rebuilt the whole thing for 600 quid more than I could have. They don't work to book times (eg, Subaru reckons on 7 hours to get a gearbox out and back in, apparently but even I did it in 4 and it was my first one) so when it's done, it's done. The bloke who owns it, Knowlesy, is an absolute gem, you can watch their mechanics in action through bay windows, they're friendly and they really really know their stuff.

In the end, I opted to buy a secondhand motor (2250 from a breakers) which Xtreme fitted and fettled, including a second trip back there to check mounts, etc, for only 400 quid.

I, personally, will be there every time I need something doing (I even had my car lorry-transported there for the transplant).

Hope that helps pal.

Scoobyclinic - up the A38, A61 to Chesterfield
TSL - M42/A42 to Nottingham
Powerstation - Down M5 to Cheltenham
Prosport - Up M6 to Warrington

I'm sure there's someone in/near Birmingham though.

I live in Wolverhampton and have used Xtreme, ScoobyClinic and recently Powerstation.

All great - Xtreme being in Essex is obviously a ballache, but brilliant. Had problems remapping and they were happy to swap bits over from their show car to pinpoint the fault - turned out to be the MAF.

Both The Clinic and Powerstation are easy for me to get to, but Powerstation is quicker and closer for me so will probably use them in future.

Had an MOT at The Clinic and needed new brake pads - they didn't have any for my poxy 2 pots, but made a few calls and got some delivered while I was waiting.

Was very impressed with the professionalism of Powerstation, and the facilities. Waiting room with free coffee, tea etc, TV (and some sort of digital but never used it) and a Playstation!!
Who needs main dealers!

main dealer service all the way for me i'm afraid would rather buy a car that had main dealer stamps in it than some fred in a shed job that got recommended because it was cheap no substitute for the real thing.

Lol, fred in a shed. Xtreme et al have more diagnostic kit and experience than any main dealer I know of....

A car that comes with a fist of Xtreme receipts is worth far more than one with a full service book.

Matter of opinion...... best to do the cheap service in the dealer and the big one form specialist.....best of both worlds then.
