Its a block that has extra support around the top edge of the cylinder bores, basically stronger.

Closed deck block also on 2 litre sti .......well my old sti 1 did anyways AFAIK

the pre 97 RA's all had CDB's due to rally cars running more power but this was restricted to 300bhp from 97 onwards, thats why the blocks switched to open deck to save money as the engine did not need to be as strong.
