Just cleaned my 02WRX and while standing back and admiring i noticed that the inside bit of the wheels where looking rather black.

So removed one of the back wheels, and bagan scrubbing, 45 mins later it looking much better, but still crap.

A positive of this is that i realised that the "corrosion" that i believed to be creeping over my wheels is indeed coated on brake dust

So people if someone could recommend some cleaner for the job i would appreciate it, I will be removing all wheels for the task.

Just done my 18" prodrives, I've used auto glym in the past, but I've just tried wonder wheels and it's done the job for me, however, mine for probally not as dusted up as ours......Good Luck !

Thanks mate, can you get this stuff in your Halfords or order over the net.

New to cleaning cars really, used to just get it done for me, untill i did it myself and realised how much better it looked.

Wonderwheels is good you only need it a couple of times as long as you keep them fairly clean (do great on the pugs which i tend to ignore for long periods though they do need re furbing).

Just had a thought, this isn't the stuff that can corrode the paint off the rims is it.

Shiny wheels are nice but dony want rusty ones next month.

Used it for years now and never had any problems.
I always put it into a spray bottle and spray it on then use the brush to foam it.
Goes a long way.................

Once you have them clean, try wax car polish on the wheels, brake dust is then easier to remove next time

I'll second that - when I did the car with Meguiars NXT wax I did the wheels as well. The dust is sometimes obvious, but it never sticks hard, just water and a soft brush bring it off. If you can get the wheels totally clean then it is worth protecting them with wax. Just don't try it with them 'nearly clean', it will just seal in the dirt...

Go easy on the wonder wheels stuff as it can pull the laquer off if you've got any chips in the laquer, try to use it only to get them looking good then as said above polish the wheels and the dust comes off without having to use harsh cleaners

Yeah 2nd That Comment , About going easy on the Wonder wheels , Very nasty stuff , Keep it away from the calipers , Will strip the paint in no time . Stings on your hands as well

I Take both my front wheels of every week to keep clean ( Yes im very sad )

Once they are clean they are sooooooo easy to keep clean

Once i have mine off , I Spray all around the inside rim of the wheel with WD40 , Just wiping it in lightly with a dry cotton cloth , This way the Brake dust sticks to the WD & Makes removing so easy the next time you come to clean , With just soapy water & a sponge

Use wonder wheels here too!

Never had a problem with it myself, but I have heard a few others say they have had some paint stripped off calipers. As I said, never had a problem myself...just take care around the calipers....in fact i don't apply it to the calipers at all.

i have a few diffrent things

i buy "D-CON" from a trade suplier
which if i am honest, is like wonder wheels but not waterd down at all
wonder wheels is likes kids juice compared with this stuff

im supposed to water it down 1:10 to use on alloy wheels and its bought in 5litre containers for about £9
i have used this fully neat a few times to get baked on crap of punters cars, but it can easily destroy a set of wheels in under 60 secs of its the wrong type of wheel (caution is advised!!)

normally my alloys are cleaned every 1/2 days before i open the car wash
the wheel cleaner used for the wash is actually pretty good with regular use

25 litres neat is about £16.50+vat which can then be waterd down about 1:5
so its pretty economical, i have it in 9 litre pump up sprayers

normally when i clean my car i simply pre spray the wheels with this stuff, and preasure wash it off

takes about 1/2 mins first thing in the morning and this stuff will not damage alloys (although it is not as strong as the evil stuff i spoke earlier about )

Just make sure you don't spray or brush any of these products on your calipers, as they tend to eat the coating, and if you have standard brakes they'll end up looking grey and unpleasant. Used WW on my '98, and never would again.

Personally, on all my Imprezas since then, I've always taken the time to give my new wheels a coat of Zymol or similar, and then used a clay bar to take off the excess. Doesn't take long, and you get a much better result IMO

I used to use Wonder Wheels but after the problems I had with it stripping the laquer (and lots of scare stories) I now use the Meguairs Hot Rims. Is really good stuff but don't leave it on too long! Have heard that using a clay bar is also a good idea to get rid of the little blacks spots that don't come off.

Scoobyworld do a Swissol Teflon Kit that I would love to try (£170 though! )

If I do get it though I will let you know what I think.

Used to use wonder wheels on my old car, was recommended by a friend and yeh it is good at its job although all the talk of it damaging the laquer is true. Over time you'll see that gloss finish on the alloys diminish to a flat matt finish.

When i got my subaru, had a look on here for recommendations of alternatives that would not damage the wheels and found that McGuiars was mentioned by many as being good. Gave it a try and its as good, if not better than wonder wheels, without the worry of laquer damage. Can be bought at Halfords, and seems to works better when the wheels have been sparyed with water prior to application.

Definately worth a try IMHO.

Best stuff is diluted wonder wheels 50/50 with water.

And Polish wheels every couple of Months.

since i fitted the red stuff pads the wheels are black instead of gold after a few miles. i do try to clean my car once a week but don't seem to manage it some times.

The Clay bar thingy Is what it say's , A Bit of clay

It's a block like Plastacine

You wash & Dry your car as normal

Then get the clay bar , Need it till it's flat , Spray on the Quick Detailer , To keep the paint surface lubricated , Go all over the car with it ..

Then dry of the detailer with a Terry toweling type cloth

Your paintwork will be as smoove as a Baby's Bum to touch

Why lubricate with the detailer mate when soapy water (car bath in warm water) will do the same thing ! Then you can use the instant detailer for other jobs like removing bird crap & the like !


A much cheaper alternative !
