Q: How does food get to our supermarkets?
Methinks this is the question many people will be asking themselves in about 48 hours, should there be no end to the blocades.
Remember, once the Fuel Trucks are allowed to run, it may take 3 to 4 days for the situation to get back to normal.
I think the wife may be stocking up tomorrow before the rush. Be forewarned!

So let's just capitulate to every special interest group, shall we?
There are any number of more-or-less sizeable minorities capable of mustering a street protest, and any number of more-or-less silent minorities capable of being bu66ered-about by them
e.g.
Reclaim the Streets vs the motorist
the green lobby vs the motorist
Class War vs ..everyone
So do we want a free-for all, or only when it's "us" on the bandwagon, not "them"??!!
There's the issue, and there's the process. You can agree with one but be uncomfortable about the other.
Fuel tax is indiscriminate, it hits country people disproportionately hard - but the real solution to congestion/pollution, road pricing..well! I don't want to see the reaction to that - but I bet most of you would be pretty shocked to see the pollution I find when cleaning/dusting in London.

I heard on the news that a few petrol stations had put their unleaded price up to almost £2.00 per litre claiming that if they ran out and couldn't sell more that they would still have to pay their staff. Sounds like a cheap excuse for profiteering but I guess they can get away with it.

Do people really believe that the government will simply U-turn?
Is that really sound politics? I don't think so - Blair cannot be seen to give up so easily or this opens the government to ransom on any subject that the next fringe lunatic decides to campaign for!
It is likely that the government will only negotiate ONCE everything is back to normal - therefore giving the illusion of a victory to the state.
As for the supermarkets running out (the tip of the iceberg - start thinking about everything from who do the workers within electicity and water providers get to work right through to a vast reduction in the Emergency forces ability to respond to emergencies!)- the Panic buying of anything is what causes most of the problems, if everyone calmed down and thought like intelligent beings, the effects would be reduced and the acceptable timescale lengthended.
Doesn't this remind everyone of Mad Max????

I take your point about panic buying being the root of the current problem. However how can Blair not give in to this one? This is no action by a minority fringe, everyone supports this issue, don't they? Nobody I've spoken to is against this.

Just been to Sainsbury's in Merton: No milk, no bread and very little else. Most of the petrol stations round this way only seem to have LRP.
But even worse still, no donuts or Mr. Kipling's Fondant Fancies for lunch

Does that mean that the Met. are going to grind to a halt ? We all know they cannot work unless they have their Fondant Fancies.
Cheers

If Tony Blair doesn't do something his government will fall, it as simple as that. I think he has seriously mis-read the people's opinion on this.
They just kept whopping the tax up on fuel ,and eventually people have said enough is enough Tony, Get Stuffed.
Good luck to them!. Luckily, I've still got my emergeny Y2K instructions about hoarding candles and digging my own well. Remember people, shoot to kill, its you or them.
God, I love it when it gets exciting like this!!
ps. Unfortunatly I can see the Army getting involved VERY soon!!. Still we've made our point!

Ian, LOL.
Paul, I hope you're right. I would suspect though that are just like any other petrol station (except they don't suffer from panic buying)and those bunkers you mention will start to run low in the next 48 hours.
Hopefully Blair will U-turn before then, but I'm not holding my breathe.

Bromley in Kent is in Chaos.
The way people are behaving its like world war 3 is about to start.
I went out last night to get some milk & bread for the morning and out of the 6 garages within easy reach 5 were closed and the other had PC Plod waving people away because of the stupid long queues for petrol.
I went to waitrose this morning for the bread and milk I got a 6 pint job and some woman had 6 six pint jobbies and said you can get more if you want it, I said and I'm going to put it where ??
Got my bread and someone else had 8 loaves
At the checkout the woman said they were queuing from 8am just to get in [it opens at 8:30].
Still my road was almost empty of traffic this morning, bit like 8am on a Sunday morning.
Anyone see the Sun this morning about the guy charging £11 a gallon in Derby ??

Just a couple of observations:
Panic food buying - it won't happen - due to the stupid way supermarkets are designed you won't be able to get past the queue panic buying petrol to get into the car park to panic buy food!!
Save half a tank of petrol until everyone else has run out - including Plod - then go out for a blast on empty roads - I like the sound of that one.
Still - as long as Uncle Tone, Prescott and Brown do each other up the bottom in the middle of all this it will be worth it!! Perhaps they will realise people aren't quite as stupid as they take them for.
Next prediction - as a long suffering commuter - isn't it about time our dear old rail unions announced a forthcoming rail strike?? Living 14 miles from the station I shall look forward to mountain biking 50 miles to work with no petrol and no trains!!
PS - what's dusting? - if you leave it long enough you get a nice protective film over everything. The easy way to dust - leave it until a windy day and leave all doors and windows open - gone!
PPS - I'm in trouble - just been telephoned by my wife who just happened to be cruising through Scoobynet and saw my comment about the dusting only written two minutes before (Big Brother is watching me) - only joking my dear the house is sparkling!!

AWD, get back to work, you're not paid to use scoobynet
Dave, Railstrike - I like it
The government cannot back down in the short term - I will continue to back the truckers and farmers, but best hope is that the parties will have to offer lower fuel tax to win the next election.

Hello,
Couple of observations.
1 There is no physical obstruction at the refinaries, the oil companies are observing an unoffical picket as it is not supported by any union. No laws are being broken or can be enforced.
2 This is in the interest of the oil companies as thier product is being overpriced by tax. Hence thier support.
3 The emergency services could orgaise fuel via the oil companies or armed forces BUT thier employees may not be able to get to work. I know a lot of Nurses and they dont all live down the road from the hospital.
4 Trains run on Diesel
5 I can picture a load of people on C5's on otherwise empty roads chanting "AT LAST OUR TIME IS NIGH!!!!!"

Trig: How do you know I'm not working if you're on the BBS you slacker!
I've seen a few heated arguments in progress at some petrol stations. Just as well this is not a country where guns are common.
Do you really think that the government will back down on its fuel tax system? I know that the French did but it isn't exactly normal for this to happen in England.

Panic food buying...no need as I always go for the three for two offers so have cupboards stacked!!failing that I will just bake up some cakes and live on them...Ha Markus always laughs at my tree for two offer buying but I have plenty to last me!!!!
So no worries for me!
It's lucky as this morning the queues to get into sainsbury's was about a mile long,I was glad to be going in the other direction though.

Whilst the M4 plodded along at 60-70mph this morning, MR lone Audi Quattro Uber driver was giving it serious welly and having a laugh.
Either he had a secret stash or he was having 'That last gallon moment'
NeilR
happy 1.3 Fiesta driver (right now!)

Ashbourne Sainsburys is devoid of milk and bread after women were seen buying trolley loads of the stuff.
Should all be very smelly in a few days time!
Wot no milk? I'll just have to drink beer then!
I have enough grub in my house to last till Christmas! I was meaning to empty the freezer anyway
Chris
What's next, milking the cows before the farmer?
