I am a sad old git (49) who has just been diagnoosed with a life threatening illness - I am picking up at 11.00 today a WRX STI wagon - imported new by its one previous owner - full sevice history genuine 39000 miles - looks the business - red top engine and all - 280 hp - now feeling a bit scared ( current car 1.6 Astra zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........) Advice appreciated

Work your way in gently. Like all fast cars, it only really flies if you nail it, so just watch how you use your right foot. Remember that if you floor it to overtake someone like you used to do then it will move. It will also head for the red line at crazy speed, so be ready for rapid gear changes. You'll also find that there is little power below 3000rpm, so some gear-box stirring will be required to get the best out of it. And I'd advise you work your way up on corners as well: initially at least you'll probably get scared long before the car lets go, but don't get stupid until you've got a good idea how good it is. But you WILL enjoy it.
