Default Sidewall damage - scrapper or not?

Genuine (and informed if possible) opinions sought on the following :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/benjai/Nail2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/benjai/Nail1.jpg

Is this:

a) no biggy - rip the bugger out and forget about it
b) potential tyre failure - replace now
c) lethal - do not drive

Oh and BTW, it's done 100 miles like this.

Thanks in advance.

Personally i would change it just to be on the safe side. Imagine you have a blow out and do £1000's worth of damage to your car. You would wish you just replaced that tire for about 100 quid

Thanks for the opinions guys.... Off to get a good price tomorrow then....

And if I did have a blowout, damage to the car would be the last thing on my mind, I'd be more worried about damage to me!!!!!!

And why do you always get the nail in the newer tyre, and never the one that is on it's last legs?

This is the thickest part of the sidewall. I doubt it would fail. Pull it out and see if it deflates. I am sure it will not. Leave it for a good while and monitor the pressure, then once sure it is not going down (oh errr) take it easy for a longish run. The nail looks narrow enough for the rubber to self seal as you pull it out, but if in doubt you can get some vulcanisingsing glue that will seal it good as new.

Its a scrapper fact!!!

i put a brand new one on the wifes car and clipped a pothole 10 miles later!!

tiny nick in the sidewall kiss goodbye to one new tyre and another £56 notes

no repair shop will deal with hole in a sidewall, and if you go down the tube route, and have an accident!!

I've never understood this. I had a nail through the sidewall of one of my tyres on my 3 week old WRX!
Dealer spotted it at 1k service (I hadn't) and it had to be replaced - £150! I was gutted!

Why are sidewalls such an issue and a complete "no no" to repair, when they seem to be able to fix big holes in the tread that I would think were scrappers?

Tread side of tyre is made up of 2 steel breaker wraps, and 1 if not 2 bandage wraps plua tread, s/w is just a 3mm rubber componnd and very liable to bulge if repaired.

No self respecting tyre outlet wopuld repair a S/W puncture

Sorry mate but if you pulled into our place for a tyre repair i would tell you its scrap. If you like your car in one peice i recommend you swap it. Its just not worth the risk. (b) and pontential for (c)

Thanks mate, I was rather hoping someone in the trade might reply. As it happens, I'm off in a mo to get the rears chucked in the bin (the one with the nail, and it's friend from the other side, both of which are only part worn). I'll get the new ones on the front, and move the fronts to the rear, and I'll get them to swap sides (directional tyres so swap rims too!) at the same time. It's fun trying to get the scoob to wear out 4 tyres evenly!!!!

BTW, it was a really easy decision 'cos it's a company car and I don't pick up the bill!!!!!!!! (I did pick up the nail in the company car park tho!)
