Default Undergeared WRX Import.

I feel that my mint unmodified(engine wise) 1995 Jap Import WRX is a bit under geared although it's standard. I was on the M62 today doing a steady 90 and it was doing just over 4K rpm.
When i've had it nearly flat out it's been doing just over 135 virtually on the redline.
I used to have a 1995 UK wagon with a David Wallis ScoobyECU remap making about the same power (270bhp) as my import but that would do 155 flat out. What's the difference?
Anyone want to swap my WRX for a UK?

Paul.

This is it.

I know Dave, I just didn't know that the gear ratios were different when i bought the import.

I really need a UK with higher gearing to as i don't want the car revving it's cream crackers off.

You sound a bit like me Dave, mine is not my daily driver, it's stored in the garage a lot of the time and i have a 4 x 4 for everyday use but the low gearing is still annoying.

If your old car was pushing 270 BHP then that about 15BHP more than your standard car, so even if the gearing was the same then it still would not be as fast - but then isn't 135 enough?

My WRX Import has been rolling roaded at 268bhp, it's only got a Magnex backbox and centre section.

135 is enough but i often do 120ish and often use the car on the continent on autoroutes in France etc and it's nearly flat out at that speed and i could damage the engine even though it's running on SUL and NF booster.
I just prefer the UK greaing to be honest.

Thats a very fair comment Paul, the Japan 110 restriction on JDM cars means they do not have any need for the the longer UK gearing. So under the circumstances you are far better off with the UK spec.

Paul, you could probably source a UK box and rear diff for 600 ish, and swap them onto the wrx.

Yeah Paul, I'd do the gearbox swap too! Remember, the UK cars rust like crazy after a while. The jap motors are fully galvanised or aluminium or something like that i believe. Remember the lovely patch on YAH,s tailgate!!!! My 99UK was scratched around the windscreen, and it starting to rust. Gonna cost me nearly 400 to put right!

Think I have heard of people putting a longer 5th in, dunno if that causes probs with the diff tho.

Yeah the Jap imports are lighter (approx 30kgs lighter at 1200kgs) due to a few of the panels being aluminium such as the bonnet. Uk cars are actually supposed to be "better" galvanised than Jap imports with Jap imports having very little protection (but with a lot of it being aluminium it won't need it)... must say something about the UK galvanising process! Personally I'd stick with the WRX as it's a far better spec and stronger engine. The WRX top speed is just under 140mph standard so doesn't sound like anything is wrong. I'm sure it can be adjusted ...may cost though.

ps. If you're interested in selling your WRX I'd certainly be interested. Looks very nice.

I wasnt too sure about my wrx ra's gearing at first, but I've realised its the only way I've kept my licence. Otherwise 100+ would just be cruising, and become comfortable and thats the dangerous bit.

I accept if you are eating miles its a bit of a drag, give it a bit of time though it may grow on you.

What's all this about galvanizing?

A JDM WRX will rot quicker than a UK version due to the lack of undercoating.

This is also one of the reasons for it being slightly lighter, not much though.

so what will be the top end of my my95 WRX standard except from a prodrive backbox?
i thought it would be about 150mph but i have only ever taken it to 135mph, not really bothered about top end however but the acceleration is amazing!

cheers

Eh.. since when was the wrx engine stronger.. I think not.

Paul, change the rear diff for a uk one, and add a uk box as steven says..

Howard @ HDC should be able to do a good price

LOL. I'd love to do it David. Is it really a feasible proposition? Do you know anyone else who has done it?

Will it really be worth doing or would i just be better swapping back to a UK?

Just rembered, I got a UK box for sale if you want it, make an offer, bought it with an engine from a local reliable scrapper, the engine was fitted and it is good.
