Default Interesting... Speeds through gears

I only have the sport model but I was reading about someone racing a wrx 01 at 80mph in 5th ??

Ok I pull to just under 60mph (redline) in second, not sure about third but 100 in fourth and well never tried past 120 in 5th.

Whats the turbo like when you race it gear to speed ratio ?

The jap cars have shorter gearing than the uk ones. My 94 WRX hits almost 80 in 3rd before I hit the redline. In fifth at 80 mph I am doing about 3750rpm IIRC.

The thing is the turbo cars have so much low down torque that you don't need to hit the redline often.
In fact, even in fifth at 80, in a subaru you will be accelerating quicker than most 160ish BHP NA cars in third (me and my mate regularly raced my 160BHP NA MR2 and his 220BHP WRX wagon).

I've a classic turbo and had a race with a Lotus Elise the other day. I did not leave 4th till over 120mph, and I was not that close to the red line either, IIRC about 6000-6200rpm. Cannot be sure of the exact revs, I was a little busy

I do not know what that other guy was doing in fifth at 80, other than losing his race

Speed/rpm info for the Sport

Speed/rpm info for the UK Turbo

You might need to adjust the tyre profiles and also bear in mind that your speed will usually over-read.

Why isn't it perfectly accurate? There are far too many factors that affect a car's velocity to be reasonably considered in this table. Barometric pressure and altitude all contribute to a variable air pressure that affects the external pressure on the tire, reducing its size and reducing the vehicle's velocity. The tire size is also affected by other factors like temperature, humidity, car weight, car weight distribution, weight shifting caused by acceleration, and rotational speed (centrifugal force). Gravitational forces from the earth, moon, and sun also affect the pressure on the tire and its size.
Can't say for the Turbo, but the Sport figures are pretty close.

I don't think it's miles out really but I doubt 171.9 is on the cards for me!

flat out in 2nd & 3rd looked quite accurate - I had a habit of getting caught out by the rev limiter in 2nd (my old route to work had a good overtaking point off a roundabout) - so guessed it would be about thr 65mph point.

the sport is almost spot on I'd have said, so the Sport and the Turbo keep the same until the higher speeds....

so the engines must be pretty similiar bar the turbo.. so why is it you can't increase the power on a sport..?

speed != power.

The turbo runs a lower compression for a start. Pistons may be stronger to cope with the extra power. Not sure how much you can push out of a Sport on standard internals but I'd be interested to know. For the cost though, you might as well trade up to a turbo, unless you're feeling flush and fancy a project

I would say my JDM WRX has the same gearing as the sport.

My 97 STI. Redline is 8,250 but I usually only go to 7,000 as I lose torque beyond that and get better acceleration by changing up. But at 7,500 rpm:

1st 35 mph
2nd 65
3rd 95
4th 120
5th 140
0-60 is 4.5 secs.

Any help?

same my 02WRX will do 100 MPH in third but it really starts to drop off power after about 6000 RPM so irrelevant really. Have only hit 100 in third a few times and mostly by mistake.

I've got a 93WRX with decat and I think it does around 100-110 redline in 4th gear. Not really noticed in the other gears but it does feel quite low geared upto 4th but its got some nice mid range power in 3rd.

100-110 in 4th gear sound about right to you other wrx owners?
