Question Should I Trade MY00 For Type R ???

as above.

MY00 Bog standard turbo 45000miles (mint cond).....

Should I trade for 98 Type R - or am I being daft, as the turbo is a minter but I am hankering after something with more poke. also the Type R limited seems good value.

What would you scooby do??

Cheers.

I am tempted.. but then I think more insurance, bigger running costs etc etc.
do you know if the 98 Type R had 4 pot calipers on the front?

have you a type R? and if so what is your experience with owning one.

Roblad.
4 pots on the front, 2pot on the back..no abs..adjustable diff..have mine on the way from japan now.cant wait to get her, looks much sweeter than 4 doors and more rare, here in ireland anyway..group n gearbox too, closer ratios than sti and a quick steering rack, IC waterspray sounds good to me anyway bud

i bought a type r, v5, mainly because the 2 doors are rarer and in my opinion better looking, four and five doors are still cool but as i have no need for any more doors, why bother.

no other real experience with how other imprezas drive, except 22b, so unfortumatley can not give advice, but am really glad i did buy a 2 door, and they seem to hold their money better, larger original outlay but loose less % from what i have seen.

What you planning to do? straight swap or your car plus cash.

I've got an MY00 but shes on 58K now. I too really fancy a type R but haven't got much capital to add to trade value of my current UK car.

Be interesting to see how you get on mate. May lead me to take the plunge too

I used to have a my97 uk turbo but now have a sti v5 type r. IMHO they are totally different cars to drive.

I've said this in other threads but I found the uk much easier to drive and from day one had a lot of confidence in it but the type r its a different animal. They demand respect, big time. The biggest difference is the dccd. It make the car feel very tail happy by comparison and the first few times I used the car in anger I found myself totally crossed up and lucky not to put it through a hedge. Add that to the lack of abs and it sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

But.........there's is no way I'd go back. When you learn your limits and how that car should be driven it's absolutely awesome. I think the reason they are such a challenge to drive in the early days is they are so focused. In the right hands a type r is a total weapon and much more rewarding to own/drive/mod.

The only downside I've found is the insurance but it's worth it.

I'd probably recommend an extended test drive to make sure its for you though(it will be).

I had a '99 UK Turbo 2000, which I loved, and upgraded to an STi Type-R V5. I haven't regretted it one bit. Its a far better car. And gets a lot more looks. Its just like the guys above say. Its alot rarer, more raw and focused to drive, but then again, alot more rewarding. Its also got about 100bhp more than a UK Turbo and has alot more extras. I found the insurance to be no different. Its been voted the BEST Impreza made by Impreza enthusiasts.

Why do you specifically want a Type R? I would go to a V5 STi if possible as it has the phase 2 engine (no piston slap) and revised exterior etc...

I only ask as you see so many people come on here wanting a Type R, but not really knowing much about them (not suggesting you don't!). Guess the attraction is the 2 door and DCCD, but you have to ask how much value is that to you, and would you get the maximum use from it. I would bet there are only a handful on here that know how to get the best from the diff. Just pointing that out as you do pay a big premium over a normal STi...

Thanks for all your input..

I don't know much about the type Rs, but am learning fast.
Went to see a type R on Friday advertised as "Immaculate"

B*****it Immaculate, what a pile of crap!! Rusty as hell and very tatty
certainly a steep learning curve!!

Got back into the boggo MY00 Turbo and felt a twinge of guilt for even looking.

But I will keep an eye out and don,t mind travelling to look.
I would like to swap/part ex my car +/- cash in an ideal world but unless I find a good un will stick with the UK Turbo.

Cheers.

Default JUST DO IT...

...YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!!!

[Sorry, caps lock off now]

On a MY98 Type R you will get:

4 pot front brakes on 298mm disks
2 pot rear brakes (not the sliding caliper you would get on a later MY P1 )
DCCD control - loadsa fun, but be careful on wet roundabouts
Blueprinted REDTOP Engine - Performs better and can handle more rigourous modding...if you want
Carbon fibre strut brace - mutts nuts
Uprated suspension all round
Short shift gearbox - notchy!
Intercooler waterspray - cools down induction charge
280BHP as standard - nuff said

And of course, the obligatory...

Mile wide smile - you won't be able to help it!

As mentioned, you may have to up your octane rating by adding booster to every tankfull, I did this for years and it was no burden.

The V-LTD's are rarer than STI Type R's because there were only a limited production run of them, usually 1000 in the year.

I am on my second Type R, a version 6 V-LTD and it is stonking my first was a version 3 and that was just as much fun.

If you need any more goading down this route, just check out the Type R corner in members gallery.

Type R's are amazing. Especially if you're a driving enthusiast and understand that they aren't like every other scooby and need a bit of respect, especially in the early days of ownership. Once you learn how to drive them (and I wouldn't say I'm there yet) they really are stunning, especially with a few tweaks to improve them.

Have a look at mine http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=425180
