It's bound to happen. Dealers are allocated reg numbers in blocks which tend to have sequential numbers, and they're bound to be registering a lot of similar cars.

When I did the cumbrian scoobs "raid across the border" in 2002, although I had my private reg before then, I had to do a double take on the silver my99 uk turbo in front of me! My reg had been V151 DAO, his reg WAS V152 DAO !
made me chuckle

Importers will tend to get the cars registered at their local DVLA office.
Not sure exactly how the numbers are allocated, but when a freind and myself imported WRXs in 2000, the cars were registered about 2 months apart - but only 2 nos in the reg were different!

When I got my new one the dealers had a block list of registrations (new style) differing just by the last letter. As this particular block had something that looked a "bit" like WRX, they were reserving them for WRX's, so I expect that about 20 WRXs are out there with numbers very similar to mine.
