Manifold paint?

Manifold paint?
Hey,
I recently went to look at a 99t plate sti 5 type R, it had 43k on the clock, and drove really well...although the brakes were a tad weak. Also the gearbox was making a clunking noise when you switched into 5th..
I also noticed that the red paint on the manifold had all but flaked away...is this a sign that the car has been abused?
Thanks in advance

I've always been told that if most of the paint has flaked away... specially on a MY99 STi then walk away as it would suggest that the mileage is higher than 43k.
Unless there are stacks of docs to support the mileage, and the condition of the rest of the car is 43k-ish in which case, it may have been a bad accident with a steam cleaner that caused the paint to flake away.....
Cheers,
Grant

Well there was a smattering of panit chips on the front, about right for 43k, but the front headlight had a crack in it, and the windsheild was chipped in two places...
...that on top of the flaked paint and the garbox made me a bit suspicious.
Think i should just leave it perhaps?

Best bet would be to try and get an enthusiast, or jap mechanic to look the car over for you...
The gearbox is worrying to be honest mate, specially at 43k.
