Default what will £7k get me?

hi,

im considering getting a scooby in the next few months after a little saving up. the figure im looking to have to play with is £7k.

just wondered what i should ideally be getting for my cash. stuff like age, spec, mileage etc. as im just about to turn 25 id prefer, for insurance reasons, a standard 2000/W reg UK car with 50 000 miles and a FSH, does that sound ambitious or achievable? or maybe a slightly older R/S reg motor but slightly higher standard spec, again whats availible?

could anyone offer an insight into running costs as well? im well aware insurance will be about £750 and mpg will be fairly low, is 22/23 mpg driving sensibly a decent guess? what sort of prices are standard service parts and who's the cheapest online specialists?

thanks for any info you can offer

7k should buy you a reasonable condition s/t reg with perhaps slightly higher milage than you want. I was just offered £7k trade in for a V plate with 63k on the clock, so I would expect private sales of v/w age cars to be somewhere over £7.5k, dealer prices vary but would be £7.5k+.

As for insurance, I'm 30, full ncd, protected no-claims, wife on policy, car on drive overnight, no points, no claims, good postcode, and I'm paying £700 a year insurance.

Running costs - vary's depending on what you intend to do to the car - as standard, I would expect 270 miles to a tankful of optimax with a good mix of driving. Work on it being £45 to fill it up.

Servicing is every 6 months or so, major services are steep, at anywhere between £300 and £500, minior services are around £150, depending on where you go. Main dealers are generally avoided when warranties run out, as they have always been slightly more expensive than the specialists. Be careful wich speacilists you use however, as not all of them follow the exact service schedule in the handbook.

as for parts online, plenty of scooby only sites around, I'm not going to advertise for them but if you do a few searches the good (and bad) will turn up.

As for an Impreza being recommended, it most certainly is!

Im 24 with 6 yrs ncb, the car is parked in the middle of nowhere where there is no people (let alone crime) but barely get below 1k for insurance. If you can tell me who gave you a quote like that I would be interested.

thanks

I'd cry if I had to let my X plater go for £7,500!!!!

Personally stick to MY99-00 as you get last revision bumper and 4 pots and a bit more power. MY99 may well be best with regard to some feeling that the 99 ECU is better than the 00 (or summat!)

Now, if I had the money I paid for my car back in Oct 03 I'd go for a 2 door STI for sure.

Think you'd better get used to the idea mate, 'cos mines been on here for 4 months, the ads had nearly 5000 views, and no-one's bothered their **** to even come and look at the thing, let alone make a reasonable offer. Thank Christ it's not into me for too much, or I'd off myself.

you must have a blindingly good postcode to get a quote that low. I'm also quite surprised that privelege even entertain the idea of insuring a modified impreza.

Think I'll give them a ring and see exactly what they can save me.

i think u need to be 25+ if it's modded with them - get a quote online 1st, take it out if it's good or ring them...you have the right to cancel within 14 days and get a full refund.

discount for doing it online...or say it wouldnt take your card etc etc

oh, you need a tracker too - i wasnt bothered as it was extra peace of mind but cost me £350 from motorguard in brum

sorry not you i just hoped for a bit more info from the guys and some straight answers. im planning for 3/4 months in the future once my situation changes slightly and ive had the chance to save up a little cash. i agree that is a cracking price mate and if its still there for another 4 months ill be in touch lol

im 24 with 6 years NCB, parent named driver, good postcode and no accidents, tesco's quoted me 750 but i still hope to get it slightly lower with luck, especially as ill be 25 when i hopefully get an imprezza

I just insured with Privilege Insurance online - answered every question 100% honestly and accurately. There were no questions about modifications or imports.....

They were £150 cheaper than Direct Line who I was with last year - and Direct Line underwrite them. I'll never understand the insurance market......

bit of a bonus quote there from direct line!!! £676 once i turn 25 in a few months. not sure how the insurance will work though, as i currently hold a policy with them so i may not be offered such a cheap price to upgrade my car, or even quote me at all as ill have become 25 whilst already with them when the time comes. may have to cancel my insurance 4 months in then take out a new policy again?!

OMFG?!?!?!

WIth my details on a wagon i get a quote of £1715.70, i change the postcode to yours i get £710.85, if i then up the excess and no legal / protection i get £577.50. Do you live in the centre of a police station or something?

lol its due to me living in the east coast of scotland i guess, i live in arbroath now but insurance was still cheap when i lived in dundee. strange cos neither of these areas arent exactly prestige towns. that quote was also based on it being parked over night on the street and using it for business miles, im fairly chuffed.

ive read the micareds advert and if i didnt have this vectra sitting outside and it was in 3 months time i would almost certainly be giving it some serious thought

Frankly just dumb struct the different of £1000 for a change of postcode, nothing else changed just the postcode. Granted my postcode is an OL6 which is an Oldham postcode even tho it's not an Oldham address, grrr.
