Opinion.... Private number plates
Morning all,
What's the verdict on private number plates?
Indicator you have more money than sense?
Sign you are a complete ****?
Cool?
Showing off?
Just I'm thinking of getting one, although the one I am looking at will not involve putting bolts in funny locations or mixing up the fonts to read something stupid.
thanks
R

I've got one too
Very Scooby-like it is too - X555 *** (where *** is my name) - looks a bit like excess. Funny thing is, havn't put on the scooby yet... I bought a matching 555 plate for the wife too (with her name), just need to get her a scooby now!

I've got one...and although I probably have more money than sense....that doesn't mean I'm rich by any stretch of the imagination
Had to sell the car it was on though and it can't go on my Scooby due to the age
It was my company name follwed by my initals - was only a cheap one though - but looked ok.

[QUOTE=rossi_p]Morning all,
What's the verdict on private number plates?
IMHO i think they are tacky, but as i said they are not my cup of tea. A good way to make money though, i bought a couple of old minis a few years back with cherished number plates and actually made 1k by just selling the plates.. :-) didnt want the cars and they went to new homes for nothing.

I've got one on mine, but only cause it came with it. Honest! :-)
I think whether or not it is cool very much depends on the contents!
Mine just has the '555' in it along with the previous owners initials, so that's acceptable in my book. I think some of them do make you look like you're trying too hard though. It's certainly money that can be better spent on other things.
Besides, if they're close enough to be able to read your number plate, you're not trying!! ;-) *joke*!!!!

its a matter of personal opinion - there will always be those that will put you down for it, but as long as you're happy... stuff what anyone else says/thinks. they can some times make good investments. mine is my Scoobynet username, requires no illegal spacing or fonts (how it should be) and is for the most part recogniseable as what it is intended to be.
i wanted K3VYN but DVLA wouldn't sell it to me, it was going to auction. i have no idea who owns KEV1N, and by no stretch of the imagination could i afford it. however, if i was a rich tw@t and it was available.. i'd buy it! just do what makes you happy!

I'm not keen on ones that are related to the car, unless it is something special like F13 STA - any containing WRX are just corny IMO.
However, I do feel that it's ok to have one relating to your name.

I agree that they are extremely cool and clever IF its NOT messed about with
Those that have been squeezed, altered, bent, screws placed in special places look absolute CACK!!! They say ONE thing, and ONE thing ONLY - you 'want' to be wealthy enough to have a proper one, but can't stretch to one - sad and pathetic
Mine is as it came out of the DVLA, by the way
Pete

Seems general consensus is that they are fine as long as not messed around with with silly fonts and bolts etc (which I wouldn't dream of!).
thanks all

Worst I ever saw was very recently, a Porsche Boxster with the plate:
B10 XTE
The 1 was micro thin, about 1mm thick so it was virtually invisible and the plate was squashed together to read:
B|OXTE
The funny thing is, all that effort to make it illegal and it still only reads BOXTE, so he still looked an utter tw@t

One of the best I've seen recently is P 15 TAF with the T moved towards the 15
None of mine are buggered around with, but my front plate has been made smaller basically coz I can
John.

i kinda agree with ya there Pete, although i'd say a plate should mean something more to the individual rather than the masses that see it. so while to everyone else it looks like a normal plate, the person who owns it is and should be happy with their personalisation.
my car genuinely looks like a 'K' plate given my name, but that bothers me not... the car looks great and i'm happy with my personalised plate purchase regardless of what it doesn't mean to anyone else.
