Isn't it legal to fit single or twin air horns to a car but the musical ones can only be fitted to pre 1973 ( I think ) cars ???
Intreseted in the outcome of this as I am thinking of upgrading my horn !!

I dont think that tunes were ever legal but twin (constant) tone horns can be fitted to earlier cars as Mark says. The MoT site actually mentions 'Colonel Bogey'; I doubt theyll go for 'Dixie' either.....

but you can have the musical airhorns fitted on the car as long as they are additional and not there to replace your standard horn, i.e wired onto a seperate switch,

I concur...lol
My scooby horn is pathetic. It should sound like an old montego horn or something, they were monsters..!!!
Whats with the PIAA one..??? What the heck does a "sports" horn sound like..?!!??
Any suggestions for a straight swap replacement? ie. one piece...?
Nige.

Airhorns.. legal? - who cares!
I'm sure you're probably running a decat anyway!
I've got a set at home, just got to source some nice thick wire and they'll be on the car. For a high performance car they have very low performance horns!

Not strictly true; my first car was a Lancia HPE and it had an airhorn as standard; I had a FIAT 131 Sport too, that had a similar airhorn.

My understanding is that air horns are legal on any car as long as they emit a single continous tone. This can include harmonics, e.g. one/two/three/four horns as long as all horns are blown at the same time etc.

Ring (and no doubt others) do an electric air horn (snail shape). I got one from Halfords £10 and it's very good. Just used one instead of the oem two (taped up 2nd connector). You have to bend the bracket a little that comes with the new horn to clear the radiator. One thing is they do a 'hi' and 'lo' tone. The high is defo the best.

i had the ring air horns on my rs turbo last year. passed the mot fine. they were rather loud though. halfords still sell them and i think they are £19-99. i will be getting some for my scoob as soon as i can be ar$ed to go to halfords. the standard one is all a bit limp risted imo.
