so the paint code for a p1 is 74-f ?,,,, but the jap import sonic blue 74-f , is a better brighter colour , but both still have the same paint code ,

can someone tell me why and how to obtain the brighter colour as my cars goin for the spray but dont want to end up with the p1 blue and ive told the garage its 74-f but i dont want to end up with p1 blue

i want the Import sonic blue colour

i dont want to sound weird but it is true they are totally different looking blue colours ,

you need to check how many variations there are on the colour, 90-95% of colours have variations of the same paint code, for example ford diamond white has about 8 variations on the same paint code, one has extra green in it, one has extra blue , one has extra yellow etc etc, unfortunately just by looking at the paint code theres no way of telling which one it is, the only way is to use colour swatches to determine the right variation, any bodyshop should hold the colour swatches and therefore if you have an example or sample of the colour they can match up the variation,
which variation is used depends on where the car was painted, as different factories will have mixed the colour slightly differently hence same paint code, different looking colour,
this should be the case with subarus too but if anyone knows differently then feel free to correct me,

You are absolutely correct. Ive come across a Renault Clio white that had nearly twenty shades from memory. In practice thats 20 colours with the same name...

I thought the P1 was sonic blue, exactly the same as the Type R had on the 98/99 cars?

Has anyone seen them side by side?

I have a Dutch import, sonic blue paint code 74f, but the official 74f touch-up stick is a couple shades darker.
having said that my paint shop had no problems matching the colour when it went in for a wing respray - i think they just matched it straight off the car, no need for codes

I have a V5 STi Type-R, Sonic Blue which is a different shade to a P1 and 22B. My mates V5 STi Type-R V-Limited is a darker shade too. It can be quite confusing!

I didn't know my Terzo (74f) was the same paint code as a P1.

Swish, the garage should be able give you the right shade (might be worth reminding them).

My car was sprayed in sonic blue code 74f -1, that was going by the colour swatches from the paint supplier. This shade was a touch lighter than the 74f colour swatch. When upgrading my front end to 2000 spec my front panels/parts (bonnet, wings etc) came from my damaged imported type R which was in the lighter shade sonic blue. 74f-1 seemed to be the nearest match to the original panels.

My bodyshop actually matched the paint to that of the panels I supplied. When I asked if I could have some of the left over paint, just in case I needed a touch up. The label on the paint tin had 74f?
When I damaged my passenger side mirror I needed to get more paint for the repair & I ended up getting the 74f-1 shade to match the rest of the car.
The 74f code was to dark.

My car next to a P1 looks a lighter shade.
Mind you my friends 22b looked a slight darker shade next to the P1?

My advice would be to make sure you get plenty of extra paint, you never know when you'll need it. Trying to find a paint supplier/mixer to match your excat shade can be a pain.

Not sure if this helps but 74f is actually called 'new 555 rally blue' and not sonic blue, although this is what most people refer to it as.Dupont have 3 different shades listed and say it was painted between 98 and 2000.
Cheers Simon.

Thats very cheap? I paid twice that, even though I had the boot done.
Engine bay was done first by a friend for free. Thats when I found out about the different shades of sonic blue. Luckly it was only the engine bay.

luckily my car goes intomorrow and autopaint is round the corner from me , and im gonna go get the paint myself or go with vinny to get it , and im gonna make sure ticky like ur`s its 74f-1 ,
as i see the p1 sonic blue i think with gold wheels they do not do justice for the car at all , but the gold wheels on the import just sets them apart especially if you got 18`s on

I can understand how difficult it would be to spray the engine bay what with the engine in place as well all the other bits. Why not have the boot floor done, sure it cannot be that much more expensive? Pretty simple to remove spare wheel carpets/liners etc. (Scotch the boot)

Thats good new at least now you can get the correct paint shade.
If your paint suppliers has not got the correct swatches & mixes his own to match the sample then could you please mail me the breakdown of paint code mix.

As for sleeping with your Mrs, thanks but I am happly married with 2 kids lol.
