05' STI heavier than WRX ? Why ?
According to Subaru Uk website 05MY WRX 4 door has kerb weight of 1395kg, 05MY STI 4 door has kerb weight of 1470kg. This seems odd to me as surely the extra weight will cancel out some of the power advantage ? I know the 6 speed box is probably heavier than the 5 speed but the STI has aluminium bonnet and presumably other lightweight components to compensate so where on earth is the extra 75kg coming from ? I am considering changing my current car for either a new Scooby or (dare I say it) a new EVO so I would be glad to hear any theories on the weight issue.

It's only 75kg, which is only 18kg/corner. The STI has the 6 speed box (which probably accounts for most of it), plus it has a bigger turbo, intercooler, brakes and diffs plus stiffer ARBs and suspension. Then there's the cosmetic bits (side skirts, spoiler, bonnet scoop) and comfier seats.

If you're worried about it, buy a Spec C. Get all the STi goodies (and a few more besides) but lightweight glass, boot lid, fuel tank, reduced sound deadening etc. get it back to 1370/1390kg (without/with electrics). Then go on a diet, take a **** before you go out for a drive, drive in just your underwear and never let anyone else in the car.

Have you forgotten which website your posting on John? and how's the new salesman's job going at Mitsubishi.
I presume you are happy with the new set of wheels then
Back on topic buy a WRX and then modify to get the same BHP as an Sti

IIRC the gearbox is worth about 25-30kg of the weight difference, plus diffs and a few other stronger mechanical bits will add up. I'd be amazed if the VF series turbo is more than 1kg heavier than a TD04.
To be honest, I think the extra weight is compensated by the extra gear ratio, so power for power, a WRX and an STi will be an even match in most circumstances. However, re that last post - With an STi, you have the gearbox etc to go for 400bhp or more, and better brakes/handling. With a WRX, you have comfier/softer ride, much faster spool up on the turbo, and lower purchase price, but a gearbox that'll probably break at 330lbft of torque or above

Don't forget wheels and tyres..!
The 7.5j wheels and 225 RE070 on the STi weigh in at over 24kgs each..! An alloy and tyre (215 re050) on my 05 WRX weighs in at 18kgs, therefore an extra 24kgs unsprung weight. That's why I recently passed on a set of the anthrecite WR1 take off's at the right money..!
