Car cutout - any ideas please?
Hi,
Car was involved in a fairly major (6K) accident 3 weeks ago (Still being fixed). What happened was my wife was coming to pick me up from work, went to park the car, and as she steered it totally cut out. Lost steering, brakes, etc. and could only roll into a lamp post. What I'm after is if anyone has any idea what could have gone wrong? I don't think the insurance company or the bodyshop fixing it have any real interest in looking into it (Just want to fix the damage) so I want to try and get an idea of the problem myself.
The car stalled on me a couple of times pulling up to junctions, the revs dropped right through the floor - didn't think it was anything major though. Was due a service & I was going to get it checked out then. Problem is if the problem doesn't get fixed then I don't think my wife will be able to trust the car and it will have to go - although I was talking about getting a (replacement) Golf GT TDi this week and she's not keen!
Its a MY00 Classic Turbo, BTW.
Thanks in advance...

Has the idle been erratic, or have you noticed a flat spot in the power delivery around 4k revs ? For an engine to suddenly and repeatedly die, it suggests a sensor somewhere is feeding the ECU with a spurrious signal, and the usual culprit on 98-00 cars is the MAF. It may be something else, or a combination of the MAF and another dodgy sensor. I'd suggest doing an ECU reset, after which the CEL light should come on if any of the sensors are boogered. Either that, or take it to a dealers or specialist with diagnostic capabilities and get it checked out. I would guess that when your wife lost control, there would still have been brakes and steering, but without servo assistance the pedal would take one hell of a strong leg to get decent retardation, and the steering would have been very heavy without power assistance. I'm guessing she panic'd and dropped the clutch, as if it stalled in gear it would have abruptly halted too. Sorry to hear about the damage, and I hope you get to the bottom of your mystery fault.

I had the same problem with mine mate this is was my post underneth and the answer hope it helps;
This is my scooby...http://www.novaload.net/features/vi...re.php?ref=2257.
1.Could some one tell me what the v.limited edtion has extra? i've been told it's better reliability due to some part??
2. Also i had a full decat system put on my scooby and just recently the revs are dropping and sometimes cuts out. A mechanic has had a look and he is going to check the emissions, could any 1 tell me if it is anything else?
3. What would you pay for this car if you were to sell it.....i'm not thinking of selling it just would be intersted in what peeps would pay!
answer;-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Nothing to do with reliability, thats for sure. I always thought the v-limited scoobs had a roof vent??
2) maybe lamda or maf sensor up the creek. Lamda= £60-90, Maf = £90-250.
Would definatly get that problem checked out by someone who knows their scoobs. Otherwise could lead to engine failure.
3) If I was selling it, I wouldn't pay anything for it!
Just kidding, difficult to give a price at the mo, but if you wanted to shift it quick, £6000-£7500
