Red face Towing a Car + Trailer Question

I am considering buying a car + trailer for use on the track, BUT it has been suggested to me that towing a 4 wheel trailer with a car ( Laguna Diesel) is illegal as it is too heavy. I thought this would only apply to unbraked trailers?
Anyone got any knowledge of the law / guidelines for this?

Cheers

Daz

I think you are able to tow a braked trailer up to 750kg on normal licence.Check with DVLA or local traffic police.

Its way too heavy! You need a larger vehicle; ideally a Landie or another 4 wheel drive that can be considered dual purpose. Unless youre towing a Caterham or suchlike on an insubstantial trailer.....

you would be mad.

each car should tell you in its handbook, what the max braked towing you could do. it all depends on the trailer and car, but say 500kg for a trailer and 1000kg for a car perhaps, and that will exceed most legal towing capacities, even some of the "urban" off roaders.

you cant beat 4x4s for towing, as they often have the weight to balance out what they are towing, and consequently are far more stable, plus they are often better geared for towing.

I've told all over the place with a MY03 wagon and a brian james trailer with my ex race clio cup car.

If you load it right, and it has to be inch perfect, she feels fine- but I appreciate that its probably a close call, IIRC the clio weighs in at circa 700 kg, and the transporter 375 kilos. I think it will legally / safely tow about 1250 kg braked?
