Different insurance companies apply the ABI categories in different ways; Ive seen Porsches that have nothing salvagable on them as Cat C's and cars without chassis leg damage with destruction orders on them.....
Category A: These cars have a destruction order; they may be completely burnt out or have been extremely badly damaged with little or no salvagable parts remaining; its common for fatal accident vehicles to be crushed too. Some greedy insurance companies will sell the slavage though; watch out for purple dye...
Category B: These vehicles are sold to local authority licensed breakers only for dismantling. There are no hard and fast rules and Ive seen a lot of relatively easily repairable Porsches that were classed as Cat Bs.
Category C: Cat C vehicles will be sold for salvage and repair. These should be econonically viable to repair but Ive seen some completely slaughtered cars in this range. It all depends on the assessor and the policy of the insurance company involved.
Category D: Lightly damaged vehicles; stolen and recovered and constructively written-off vehicles will be given a Cat D status.
This is based on my experience dealing in Porsche salvage; it mightnt match too closely what the ABI will state on their website.

This gives the ABI's take on the subject but in practice things are a little different; V23s arent always submitted by the insurance company even for severely accident damaged vehicles; though they may be submitted by the Police... especially for 'tasty' cars.
