The how to deal with pesky snow and ice on car
Hi all,
My car has gone from DBM to white overnight!!!
When it finally stops snowing, I'd like to get some of the excess off the car and try and ensure that the door seals aren't frozen before I open the doors etc... I was thinking simply using a bucket of warm water would do the job best.....as long as you don't leave it on there too long so it re-freezes, obviously!! However, could the very sudden change in temperature damage the paintwork, or am I just being daft?
Any useful tips out there for dealing with a snowed in/frozen car that people would like to share?
All the best NS04

I don't think people in Finland, Norway and Sweden have too many problems I'd be careful with the luke warm water, as if it's even slightly too warm you could be looking at shattered glass. I'm guessing that the white you're refering to is salt from the roads. Best way to get rid of that $h!t is a jet wash, then whilst it's still wet, follow it with a good bucket wash. To keep the window rubbers supple, treat them with glycerin (available from good chemists). I usually let the car run for 5-10 minutes before driving it on particularly cold days, as the oil will be like treacle and you really don't want too much load on things then Also gives the heater time to warm everything else up a bit.

Avoid the problem in the first place matey
all week here in sheffield, its been snowing/sleeting,so ive used an old kingsize bed sheet thrown it over the motor, and it covers all the windows/mirrors etc
Then in the morning(around 4.30am when its time for work)just pull it off and hey presto! all the snow comes off with it,leaving a nice clear motor

I used the kitchen broom to get the bulk of it off. Then a wee ice scraper for the rest of the windows.
I've used warm water since passing my driving test and NEVER shattered a windscreen. Obviously you need some common sense determining whats 'luke warm' and not boiling

Our Swedish hire car came equipped with a very soft brush on a long handle with an ice scraper attached to the other end They also told us to lift our wipers off the screen overnight.
