Obviously designed in a darkened room by monkeys on acid.
I predict UK sales will plummet, but Subaru won't care 'cos the Yanks will be buying squillions of them.

The interior doesn't look any better to me. In fact some parts look identical to MY00 so I expect that the quality won't be any better.
These photos are the best I've seen so far, and the shock is starting to wear off. However I still don't like the flared wheel arches (I could never buy a 22B) and the headlamps make it look like a fish.
I bought my MY00 to keep for at least 3 years so I suppose I'm not worried. I bought it based on performance alone, but I actually think that the old car looks good (irrespective of the new model).
In 3 years time if the WRX is still taking the lead in performance/cost then I'll get one, assuming that the trade-in value is OK.
I thought that the new model would only be slightly more powerful. If its up to the 240-250 bhp mark then my car's definately off to Prodrive. I'm not going to be outdone by a fish!

The lights look absolutely awful IMHO - and what's going on with the indicators, 1 inside the goldfish bowl sorry headlight, 1 very close to the leading edge of the wing and a further repeater in the normal place.......

Just some more humble opinions to add now I've seen the photos at the japanese website...
Firstly, the colour makes a big difference. The dark blue in the 2nd post makes it look awful. However the salmon colour (how appropriate) makes it look much less bad.
The rear wing (on the mettalic blue one) looks like it could be snapped off by a 5 year old.
The wheels are/look ridiculously small.
The wheel arches as standard take away much of the discreet(ish) Q car effect.
The interior (surely the biggest gripe of the old/current shape) doesn't seems much better.
Rear lights look like a Hyundai Coupe.
But, by far and away, the worst feature is the front lights. Not even an easy thing to modify either.
Oh well, when the time comes I will choose an Evo over the Scoob, regardless of performance/handling etc (not a huge difference anyway). Just hope Mitsubishi don't screw up the next Evo's styling.
When I drive a car, people (if at all) should point/stop/stare out of awe/admiration. Not pity or ridicule.

Front looks a bit froggy to me.
Its not toooo bad lets face it.
A bit Hyundai coupe maybe with a hint of escort cossie on the arches ?
Its supposed to be a lot heavier tho to comply with the new jap crash test standards, so even with 247, the power to weight aint likely to be much better than the current model.

I've just been scanning the pics and arcticle in this months Autocar. It does look a bit pants to me (to put it politely) but I'm gonna reserve my final opinion until I've seen it at the UK Motorshow as cars often look better (trying to be optimistic!) in the metal.
The picture of the seats in the magazine is different to the one posted above, they look more like the current Impreza seats with a little more padding but not much different.
I think the interior appears better but its the quality of it that counts, again I'll wait until I can get my mits on it at the motorshow. Keeping it simple, as on current models, would be my preference.
At the end of the day I imagine most people buy Imprezas for performance and handling foremost (like I did) and looks second, and it sounds like the performance and handling won't suffer which is the main thing to me.
I wonder howmany have ordered the new Impreza???
Also in the magazine in the 'clubbers guide' is is a good plug for SIDC which is good to see. Some of the names mentioned, such as the 'Vice Chairman' are a little dated though now unfortunately...

News Flash : Dateline Japan :
Subaru Design Chief Attacked, Others Injured
After the announcement of the new bodystyle, and the release of the supposed Subaru of Japan sanctioned pictures, a rabid mob of protesters fueled with rage over the new styling, overan security officers at the main design site. Having forced their way into the building, they sought out the chief design manager and project manager, pummeling several people along the way. After finding their prey, they stripped them and forced them to sing songs of shame, and poured used engine oil from the current body style, chanting, "the blood is on your heads now." Local police were able to calm the crowd down and restore order. Subaru has yet to make a public statement, buy several employees stated, off the record, that they told management that this would happen, but the concerns were dismissed.

I think this looks pretty good with some interesting detailing ( check out the official release pics. )
All you dissenters;
- the current model isn't exactly attractive and balanced ( especially if you're rear wing is knicked or you bought a GL)
- it is obscure and the average motorist doesn't know what it is
- the interior is pants
- but it is Q car and goes like stink
- loved by enthusiasts mostly.
Sounds to me like the new car will be much the same as the old and I bet you all buy one.
I think it looks pretty purposeful from most angles.
If you can't live with the looks undoubtedly the aftermarket will come up with a more aggressive nose, perhaps a rally lighting set up or Scoobysport 'Front End.' Who knows.
247bhp , 5.0 to 60 , 4wd, boxer engine, pedigree...... I'm getting one.
Corolla effect or not this isn't one for Grandad.

Chuckster,
I'll wait to the motorshow here in the UK to see it in the flesh, personaly I love the current shape/interior and it's a shame they have to change it so radicly ....
Didn't the UK hate the Sierra when they dropped the Cortina ?? and we grew to love it ( OK not everyone ).
But I have to admit I hoped the spy shots were fakes and it was all a big hoax ... but alas ... love it or hate it we have a new shape and were are stuck with it till the next facelift.
On a good note, I remember Clarkson commenting on the Ford Scorpio that it was like a frog and ugly but when you driving you can't see the front, just enjoy the ride ... So perhaps the performance will distract you from the looks ....
I hate the STi rear wing though ... bet a few aftermarket companies will supply a new more improved/better looking model

The link posted by kev, is err...revealing to say the least.
What annoys me is that they radically changed the exterior, to the extent that we all hate it.
THEN, they left the interior much the same! The door trim hasn't changed. The underside of the dash hasn't changed, the console over the transmission tunnel hasn't really changed. The seats are much the same. What the hell did they do then? Just changed the topside of the dash which housed the centre console and the binnacle. That's it! and even that looks like it's straight out of a Ford Fiesta!
B45tard5!
In my opinion, if they had re-worked the existing exterior, and completely renewed the interior, they would have been better off.
It'll sell in droves!

I like the arrows all over the car that seem to state "STi can improve on this, this, this". The wheels are still MY98 and look totally lost in those arches, and what is on the instrument carbunkle in the centre of the dash......where am I going to put my Oakley's now then
Yex
PS: why don't we all turn up on the same day at the Motorshow and let them know just how bad we think it is.

The exterior is growing on me, it's still no looker, but then again neither is the current car. The worst thing I can see is the seats, they look naff. Fancy replacing a superb pair of one peice seats with something that looks like it's come out of a Vauxhall Vectra.
Imran, if you think they look the same as the seats in the current model you need your eyes testing.

I was actually referring to the ones in the pics that are on the link posted by Kev.
If you look at the pics further up this page, the seats are from a SPORT type model. Look in the windows of the WRX shown, and you'll see the winged seats.
So basically the interior pics don't match the WRX pictured.
