One thing I was told by the previous owner of my scooby when I bought it, "always presume the line of cars in front will have someone who will try to overtake when you do!"
The amount of times I've come up to a line of cars stuck behind miss daisy, and the first oppurtunity to overtake has resulted in at least 2 medium power cars having a go at overtaking. I usually switch my lights on full dipped beam, sit in the middle of the road, and start to indicate my intentions. If I can see they still haven't seen me, then I wait for them to overtake miss daisy, then overtake them at another spot up the road.
Always drive as if the cars in front dont know your there, its called "defensive driving" and you have to presume everyone else on the road is blind! Works for me everytime

Agree with cw42 - if in doubt, I will pull out and wait a moment or two before hitting the gas.
However, I normally give cars a couple of chances to pull out - I sit in the queue where I could overtake, and just watch what other cars are doing. If no one has moved, then I will take the next opportunity to overtake, but still be watching for the other cars....
Doesn't stop the odd hard braking moment, or cars trying to close the gap that you were intending to pull into
Just can't trust people all of the time.....oh and speed kills!

Overtaking a number of vehicles at once is frought with danger.
Most people are happy to sit behind something and not think about overtaking others will. It's wise to find out which one you've got infront of you before you try.
The @rsholes who close up on each other, trying to stop you pulling in, should IMO be locked up for attempted manslaughter..!
