Default 03sti new clutch - thoughts/advice ??

63k in 03 sti+ppp and need a new clutch.

2 quotes from main dealers so far 800 & 1100 excl flywheel.

questions if anyone has an opinion

1. 63k .... i don't drag it often, but do drive hard ... seem ok mileage ?
2. do i need a new flywheel ?
3. 800 sound ok ? ... (is the low bid reeling me in for more once open ?)
4. do i buy standard part and have it fitted at dealer or go elsewhere ?

cheers, Mark

Mark,

1. It's pheasible that the clutch could be worn at that mileage if you drive it enthusiastically

2. You won't necessarily need a new flywheel unless it's grooved, which it probably won't be unless its had a *lot* of abuse

3. £800 sounds a bit heavy tbh, although you are paying main dealer rates.

4. It depends on the warranty position; I would expect to get it done for quite a lot less at a specialist rather than a main dealer matey.

I was simularly quoted by dealer for MY02STi @ 16kmiles £1200 inc flywheel and £850 without and fitted. Prices only vary because of Dealers Labour rates Prices for Parts and labour are fixed cost IIRC

TSL & Scooby clinic(I think) quoted for lightened flywheel and AP Clutch about £850 fitted.

Tony

Ps The Flywheel did need changing

Wink

I had a OEM fitted by dealer .

I wouldn't go for the lightened Flywheel as there could have been Warranty issues if engine blew but fitting an AP Clutch wouldn't. IMHO

Warrenty only covers Failure and not wear & Tear so may consider getting an AP (far less smelly Clutch than the OEM) and maybe fitted by none dealer next time

Like T5NYW said, the AP clutches are supposed to be stronger, but maybe they're also harder to live with if you're doing many miles

Unless you go for a paddle you shouldn't really notice much difference.

I would think that IM might try to avoid a warranty claim if you were to have a gearbox problem somewhere down the line though.

my dealer said it would be ok ... conversation wasn't recorded !!

it's a servicable consumable, so it would be hard to argue unless there was negligence on the installation.

waiting for full TSL quote ... £80 for "reengineered flywheel" ... £400 for lightweight .. so your 850 looks "light"

power eng quoted 925 all in (no mention of flywheel) .. AP organic.

TSL said they wouldn't do the job without fitting a flywheel as otherwise i'll come back complaining of judder.
