I saw on the Dyno page that the Prodrive Performance Pack on the MY99 car is really effective.
Can one of you guys explain what Prodrive do and how much it costs.
Any chance of the US 220HP WRX getting those upgrades when we finally get a Turbo model next year? (maybe not from Prodrive or maybe so - there's a huge market out here for quality upgrades - are you listening Prodrive?)
FYI: I left the UK a few years ago - I never owned an Impreza whilst I lived there, I drive a 2.5RS now in Los Angeles.

For the PPP Prodrive basically swap the back-box for a single tail-pipe, change the air filter and also change the ECU.
Whilst it is unlikely you will get this option over there, you will be able to perform a 'diy' version for much less money.
There are a number of different backboxes and exhausts available, including full systems. How these will fare with your strict emmission laws is another matter.
There are also a number of aftermarket air filters available, and an induction kit is another popular option.
As far as ECU's go, there are a few major options....Motec, Unichip, Link, though which of these will be available to you again is another matter.
Once you guys get the turbo though, I don't think it'll be too long before some of your great tuners get to work on it!

PPP (post 99) consists of new back box and cat-less centre section (2.5" throughout), replaces the entire ECU and fits higher spec intercooler piping. No longer replace the air filter.

The PPP is the ONLY kit that retains your warranty in the UK (and certain other countries)
We are currently looking at a PPP for the new car, this WILL be avialable in the USA (and RoW)
The early (pre 99MY) PPP was back box, ECU, Air filter and brack pads. The 99MY - Kit has ECU, Exhaust and new intercooler pipe-work (we do not change the air filter because there are currently NO air filters on the market that meet the FHI standard for filtration)

I am sooo incredibly impressed! The midrange torque is quite phenomenal. The car used to shove in the first 3 gears and accelerate strongly from there on - now it shoves in the first 4 gears. The torque peak is also lower, so it's a lot more useable and driveable.
Outright speed isn't that much better, 'cos you only get about 20kW (27bhp) extra (240bhp @ 6000rpm).
The sound is incredible. Quiet at steady throttle, a thrummy thunder on boost. From the outside (according to my cousin) - it sounds like a controlled explosion).
I paid R23000, which is about 2300 pounds. Worth it.

The Performance Pack can only be done at Prodrive's premises in Banbury.
I was told it can be done from day one (a la RB5 WR sport), but better to wait until 1000 miles+ is on clock (mine was done at 900 miles), cost is c£2k. Claimed benefits are power to c240 (most dyno nearer 250) and torque to c250lb/ft?? Difference on the road is *very* noticable, and gives a nice base for further tuning (apparently )

In the UK we like to do the fitting here at Prodrive - This is a historic thing, it enables us to make sure the high level of quality and lack of warranty problems continue (Remember - in the UK it comes with full IM warranty cover)
As the export side has grown we have had to let local importers do the fitting, this has led to a small increase in warranty problems, mainly down to communication.
We recomend running in for at least 1K miles before fitting the kit.

Simon Lines - what is the warranty postion re second hand Prodrive packs??
Anil, apparently the PPP wasnt all that up until 1999 so you might be better off with a Link ECU or Unichip etc.

And a MY97 is pretty good too...
Smaller turbo spools up very quickly for earlier torque peak making it very drivable especially out of medium speed corners

Would somebody be kind enough to explain why it is better to do 2,000 miles before fitting the PPP.
I have a RB5 WrSport and as such have had the PPP fitted from new.
Can I expect future problems or is my car not performing as well as it should be?

I can't really answer your question, but I know they do a good 50 miles to roadtest the pack, so presumably if it's run in they can thrash it a bit more...
Now there's a job, road testing PPP upgrades.

Ian - were there problems with a few cars with the MY98 pack, or was the pack for that year's cars simply not very good? I'm interested because I have a MY98 car and would consider the PPP if I thought it would be any good.

It only appears ot have been a few cars, several people were very unhappy with the performance they got, but there seemed to be a lot of people that were very happy with it. Best bet is find someone that has the PPP on a 98MY and see if they will let you have a go, or get a passenger run in it. Only way to get piece of mind i guess.

Roastie mentions that the car should be run on 95 RON fuel. Is this the case, I've been running mine on 97 RON? Is the remapping done with a view to the lower octane? Or does it matter at all?
Also you mention that you are working on a PPP for the new car, do you mean the MY2001?, will you also be doing a "P2"?
