MY03 WRX & STi mpg

MY03 WRX & STi mpg
I know, probably been done a million times...............
having owned a MY03 STi PPP for nearly 2 yrs, its got to go due to the arrival of another kid and the missus giving up work - the 19-20 mpg is just too much, particularly as I do about 15k miles a yr.
did own a MY01 WRX before that, which used to average about 23mpg.
was wondering if anyone with an 03 WRX really gets anywhere near the claimed 30mpg? anyone regularly get 25?
could do with honest answers please, as 25ish might make all the difference to being able to stay in Impreza land.

I get around 25mpg per tank...but that is only back road blasts for 50 miles - the other 200 or so miles are commuting (I never fill up on empty...)
If you fancy some kind of swap...then email me off the board!! (Sorry, had to get that in ).

do people do this accurate or guess, heres how I do mine (rightly or wrongly)
i.e. :
1) fill to brim
2) reset trip counter
3) empty tank
4) fill to brim
5) reset trip and note distance
6) take number of litres divide by 4.54 to give gallons
7) divide number of gallons into distance travelled to give mpg

WRX03 PPP = Max 33.3MPG on a very long drive, car full of luggage, an hour or so stuck in traffic in Welsh towns, and a lot of motorway driving. Normally around 27 MPG with a mixture of point 'n' squirt driving on the b roads and some motorway driving.

Standard MY03 WRX. Have religously recorded mpg from about 500 miles to 17k now. Sad I know. The mpg is improving with mileage, as the engine loosens up more.
Don't always run tank to empty but sometimes down to 1/4, but always fill to brim and record mileage.
Best ever on a tank full : just over 32mpg on a long motorway and steady A road run. Worst 17. Average is about 27-28 with a fair amount of motorway running.

I average around the 25 mark. 80% of the driving I do is on the motorway though and I would guess it drops to around 20-22 around town.
WRX03 PPP = better MPG!!!

there is a slightly more acurate way to work out the mpg
fill the tank up, reset the odometer, use as much as you wish, fill the tank up and keep the reciept for the gallons / litres and record the odometer reading, you now have a exact (well debatable) figures to use rather than guessing where "empty" really is.
you can now work out the mpg every fill up rather than having to run it dry all the time.

My MY03 WRX Wagon's best with a few average runs but mostly around town was 23 MPG, average of 22.
Lets face it - unless you are always doing motorway miles, you aint going to get anything much better than 25 mpg.

Tony, those are pretty remarkable figures. I usually got about 25mpg out of my MY00/PPP and I'm seeing about 22mpg from the STI. The best I ever had was about 33mpg during the fuel crisis, and that was depressing in the extreme
Andy-pay: why not enquire about a Tek 3 remap? Maybe one of the tuning firms could map the car for economy rather than power - it might be cheaper than selling the car and buying a new one.

hadnt thought of that.
seems the WRX's are a bit better than the STi then, pretty much what I thought - just need more peeps to be getting over 25mpg, to convince the missus!

Tune it for economy , is a good idea, you could always use it as an excuse to replace one cat with a sports one, ditch the others, free flowing exhaust and, new manifolds. Then Tek3 for an economy tune , you should still see a small improvment in bhp an torque plus better economy. Or use the switcheable map feature in ecu , and have one economy map and one of a bit play map.

Not sure how relevent this is to turbo cars but would definetly like to improve the MPG on my bog standard MY99 (with Subarau warranty - hence the interest in PPP differences)

If remapped correctly the air/fuel mixture should be better across the rev range thus giving better economy. Scoobs overfuel at top revs as protection but means they run rich and use more fuel if you use high revs. Obviously by remapping your are removing some of this protection though, a good mapper should be able to tap into this and give you best of both worlds.

I get on average between 220 and 280 miles for £35 - £40 Optimax, equating to about 24 MPG to 29 MPG. Pretty good for the car, and that is mixed use, a lot of congested traffic etc.

I think the PPP has made my economy worse - but this could be I just drive the thing more enthusiastically I suppose. But 19-20 seems to be about the norm for PPP STi, having read other threads.
who could do the 'economy' switchable map then?
