Default Fuel Grades in UK

I've been back in the UK for a week now, and there seems to be a complete lack of reference at petrol stations regarding the octane rating of the various fuels. I'm sure they always used to state the octane rating on the pumps, but there no longer seems to be anything! I've checked the websites for Shell, BP & esso and they don't seem to mention anything about octane levels either! Why has this info suddenly dissapeared?

So what fuels in the UK are high enough octane for my STi? (Euro spec)

AFAIK, Shell Optimax is 98RON(?) and BP Ultimate is 97RON(?)! What about other fuel brands, esso etc.? Are there any other 'Super-Plus' options available here?

Optimax has a variable octane rating, due to its structure its less stable, but leaves the refinery at 101 octiane.
Thats the equivalent to the old 5 star for those old enough to remember it.
By the time you buy it, its closer to around 97.
This is why its octane isnt always stated.
Just found this on an Esso fuel website!!!

Why is the the case then? Does it leave the refinary then get watered down with all the stuff they put in to help it clean your engine etc?

Optimax is suppose to be a maximum of 98.6Ron but Shell say it will be 98Ron or over

Cheers for the info guys! Found BP ultimate actually labelled at as 97! All the other stations I've been to don't give the octane rating - its a little confusing!

I think we do anyway!

Monitoring, as I do (sad I know), the variance of fuel quality differs from station to station.

I wish I had the power to do spot checks to see if it does exactly what it says on the tin (or pump ). I'm sure it would cause a bit of an upset.

Went into Texaco (couldn't have made a Shell on fumes) on the Swindon - Cirencester road, and the bloke in there said their Super Unleaded was between 98 and 101 RON.

So basically you've got no bloody idea what you're putting in?!
