Potential scooby owner needing final push !
After many hours of researching, reading these forums etc I'm 99% certain that I'm gonna take the plunge and get a new scooby. I've had fast cars before but nothing in this league, ie Mondeo ST24, MGTF160 etc. My current ride is a Zafira Gsi but the kids are grown up and I don't need the space so much now and it's time for me to have a bit of fun again. Who mentioned mid life crisis
The one I've plumped for is a new EU import MY05 WRX SL in Crystal Grey with PPP but before I put down the deposit I need some reassurances before I make the final jump
Come on you guys - tell me if I'm doing the right thing, if not tell me why !!
Cheers

Go for it, you wont regret it........you will smile everytime you see it, start it up and drive it!!
Why are you buying an import ? cheaper im guessing.
But just check what the differences are between UK spec and EU spec, there are a few differences, CAT 1 alarm, underseal, warranty etc etc.
It is also worth looking round at second hand ones, 04/54 models that have only had one owner and low milage, you can get some good bargains if you search and will save yourself a fair bit of cash still.
Good Luck anyway.

Yep, DO IT!!!! I agree: once you've heard a flat four rumble, you won't be able to walk away! :-) I know I didn't.
Do check the spec carefully though. Doesn't the SL feature sports seats rather than the buckets we all know and love?
Best wishes.

Try a few other things as well? There is excellent competition for the WRX, don't think I'd buy a new one now.
RX8, 350Z, Mini Cooper S Works, 182, Leon Cupra R, TT, Golf R32, Evo, (used?) 330 Sport, used M5?
I'd seriously consider any of these over a new WRX depending on how much I wanted to spend, what I was looking for as an all round package?

I did the same as you way back in 2001. Spent ages on this forum (under another username) asking questions about this and that.... and finally saved enough cash to buy a 1 owner MY99 standard UK Wagon (cost me just under £17000 back then! ) My other choice was a Vectra GSI which was full of toys and had a pretty strong 2.6L engine, but just didn't cut the mustard.
I'm now on my 2nd Impreza, an MY04 WRX Wagon.
There are ups and down to owning an Impreza. I'm always thinking there's something wrong or what's that noise, but IMHO I cannot see another car offering the same overall package to that of the 'Scoob' for the same cost. I spent a small fortune on fuel, service bills and mods on my MY99.... and now I'm doing it all again on my MY04
There are people on this BSS that have not been impressed by the newer Impreza's and much prefer Classics (and to be honest I do miss the rawness of my old car) but after 8200 miles.... I not changing back!
J.
PS. I would dearly love an Audi RS6 Avant, but my MY04 cost a 1/3 of an new RS6!

Many Thanks for all the replys
Going for an EU import as they are cheaper although there are some cracking deals around on new UK MY04's at the dealers. Unfortunately when I went for a test drive last week the dealer had a Crystal Grey in stock and I fell in love with the colour which is an 05 option only I believe..
Interesting about the SL leather seats though - can anyone confirm if they are a different shape to the normal WRX ones ? If I don't go for the SL I'll go for some 18" Prodrive OZ alloys instead
I did have a look around at other options but in terms of what I'm looking for ie 4 doors, day to day usable power/performance, discrete styling, price, andAWD the WRX seems to be the obvious choice..

I have a similar story Bartop, tried various fast cars (including an ST24) but never anything like a scoob. Got my 02 sti PPP in June and would never look back! Petrol costs have gone up a bit.... but its worth it!

Legislation changes on EU car purchasing etc. maybe now allowed by UK dealerships.
But this is hearsay and would need to speak to Prodrive for a definative answer
But well worth the money for keeping the Warranty IMHO

John Banks has given you a good list to try ..... I've just bought a new WRX Wagon and looked at some of these but your circumstances may differ than mine (I have a 3 yr old and live in snowy Aberdeen) but I ruled some of these out for various reasons ... like
RX8 - too small in the back for kids really, fuel comsumption, can't be assed revving to 9K
350Z - ooooh nice, oh no rear seats for wee one.
Mini Cooper S Works - Far too small for family, very girly image
182 - Again too small, a bit boy racery for me
Leon Cupra R - Nice, wife hated it, did have 1.8T engine before and was very dull
TT - again not enough space
Golf R32 - my 2nd choice, 2nd hand as dear as new Scoob and doesn't have as much space, would have had one if Scoob hadn't existed
Evo - looked at Insurance ... about 3xscoob
(used?) 330 Sport - Looked at a nice one, wifey wasn't keen on RWD in snow up here
used M5? - oooooh lovely, 400 BHP, RWD, Snow, Hedge, Bills, cripes
For me with a wee one and wanting 4WD there just wasn't anything else that ticked all the boxes. I had an MY00 before and the new MY05 is much better, it needs to loosen up a bit yet and I have plans for PPP at some point but it's a cracking car.

But it, you will NOT regret it.
Everytime I look at my My97 Turbo I have a massive smile on my face. Driving it...sorry her...is even better. And you're after a MY05 with PPP!
Now, this is verging on the sad but my girlfriend and my brother have said some very profound things about my car...
GF: "You love that car more than me"
Brother: "If you could sh*g the Scooby, you wouldn't be with Avril"
They have a point
