Vehicles used after 01/04/1985 are allowed upto 35% tint on side windows (AVLT must be 65% or above) and the windscreen must be no more than 30% tint. (AVLT of 70% or more)

Dont forget though that a 35% tint film if the glass is already tinted, may well make the AVLT less than the required 65%

The law which came into force on 01/01/2004 is "The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 5) Regulations 2003" and more specifically regulation number 32 of "The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986" was amended to read :-

After regulation 32(11), there shall be inserted the following paragraph -

" (11A) Paragraphs (10) and (11) have effect in relation to any tint, film or other substance or material applied to a windscreen or window as they have effect in relation to the windscreen or window itself."

With regards to the actual figures I will try and remember to clarify those tomorrow.

If say Mr illegal tint had an accident at night and the insurance company noticed the tints, I wonder if they would pay up?
Surely this amendment to the law is just the same as the law on tyre tread depth, if you have an accident with bald tyres then the lawers have a field day. Same now with illegal front tints.
If someone pulled out on me with dark tints I would get their windows tested by the law at the scene.

Be careful out there with illegal tints.

IIRC its 70% VLT for the any windows in front of the B pillar, anything behind the B pillar can be any tint level you wish.
THe next problem is that most of the newer cars on the road have roughly 25 - 28% pre-impregnated tint from the factory in the glass basically ruling out any level of tint that may be applied to the front windows, unfortunately independant tests have proved certain manufacturers tints are slightly above this level, also sunstrips cannot be deeper than 6" but once again independant tests have shown some cars have more than this from the factory.

Exclamation

If your car has tints which contravene The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 5) Regulations 2003, your car is un-road worthy and your insurance is invalid. Careful out there peeps!
