CAMBELT DUE
Hi guys. Think i'm going to arrange a viewing with this bloke who's selling his 99 impreza. Its done 76,000 mile. When will the cambelt be due to be changed or should it already have had one done by this point, or is it due another. What else should i be asking him about the maintenence of the car, what other things should have been done by this point in its life. The only other thing that scares me about buying this car with this sort of mileage on is the fact that one day i'll probably come to selling it, but who wants to buy a car with over 100,000 mile on ?

It also depends on the date of his last service and what it was, for 99 (T) its 7,500 miles or every 6 months. It may have been done or due very soon (90k). You got a sympathetic bank manager cos if it's done by a dealer it gets dear.

Just had mine done on a 98 Turbo, it's the 90k or six year service (the second cambelt) the first being 45k or three years. If he has the full service history (would steer clear if not) the the service book actually states at what mileage and year the cambelts need to be done, and the dealer only stamps it if the cambelt is done, obviously.
Mine cost me a nice £725 for the service and belt.....
Took me about five minutes in the car to forget about the money!

Full service history is the most important thing, i think, if it's cared for it will go on.... Thing I looked at when buying was the turbo (some people had new turbos which I took to mean hard driving and avoided - may be wrong - and some were clearly on their way out).
Think you can tell a lot from a chat with the owner and a good half hour drive from cold, having someone else watch for any suspect emissions from the back when you're giving it some is a good idea. Also, I would not buy a car without a full RAC or AA check, the full 150 check with HPI, plus I always try to take a mechanically minded mate along before paying for that....
Good luck
