Tom,
Im not sure how clued up your brother is on JDM cars but they (especially the STi's) need to run super unleaded/optimax AND octane booster (plus the addition of a knocklink is advisable!)
This fuel rating of either 97/98 ron still isnt high enough for what the ecu is mapped for from the factory, they are mapped for 100/102 ron fuel and are very sensitive to anything below this rating. An average bottle of millers octane plus for instance will be approximately 2 ron, with optimax that should add to just over 100 ron and with super unleaded, just under 100 ron fuel. Also, the addition of modifications can cause adverse problems, decats for instance, especially on JDM STi's, can cause higher boost levels and push beyond what the ecu is capable of correcting, this then causes det (thus the reason for the knocklink so you can see whats happening). Anyone who says just put optimax in there isnt going to pay for your new/rebuilt engine at a cost of 2k+
Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs but most people blow engines this way then say what a **** car the engine blew up, unreliable etc etc, when its acutally the fuel grade 99% of the time thats been the cause of the problem.
Tony
PS, standard 6 month (7.5k miles, whichever is first) service intervals, if the car is fitted with a DCCD (drivers controlled centre differential, its between the gearleaver and handbrake, normally on type R's and type RA's and some limited editions), lack of ABS will denote this normally, this is a 1 year gearbox oil change (15k miles) instead of 2 years.

Yeah he's aware of fuel but many thanks for bringing it up as, as you've said, its a very important factor!
The quote for my was through Elephant. Everyone else seemed to be saying either over 25 or 30!

Just to correct Subaruswift, your 1997 R reg will in fact be a version 4, will be reg between Aug and Dec 1997, but is a MY98. The code should be GC8E2DD if it's not, then check it out more!
As for price, I bought my MY97 P reg STI, version 3 for £5,500 just 3 months ago and have seen many others saying they have either bought or sold V3 and 4's for £5,500 and up. Don't be in too much of a rush, the version 3, 4 and 5 are almost identical, but don't go for the version 1 or 2, totally different engine etc. I spent 3 months looking for the right one and finding out exactly what makes a version 3 a version 3 etc. and bought privately, dealer warranties don't actually cover much and I think you can tell a lot by meeting the previous owner.

V3, 4 and 5 are totally different!
Engine went from phase 1 to 2, (from V4-5) interior changes, turbo's different etc etc... V5 has a different rear spoiler and front bumper to the 3 and 4.

There's nothing wrong with version 1 and 2 STi's at all - in fact they have the strongest closed deck engines and sought after TD05 turbos.
The later cabins are nicer (version 4+) - that's the most significant difference as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, was going to respond to the ill informed ver 1 and 2 statement above about the engines being totally different - but Topbanana is spot on with his comments. The TD05 is a little more laggy, but what a kick!!
Dont worry about the fuel - get a scoobyecu and a proper remap
