I dont own one, looking for all the info I can get for the future.
Options are be sensible and go for a UK MY99 with PPP, or poss an RB5.
Or less sensible and go for a Ver.5 Type R, just worried about the whole import thing!

That would definitly be a good idea. Can't find much info about tuning this specific model.

I have a 1997 STI Type-R, would that be a version 4?

I have white dials, they're not digital though. Only the Odometer/tripmeter is digital.

You could buy a p1. The millage will probally be acurate. And there's less chance it got nicked from someone......

It will be better to drive as a day to day car and will be great on trackdays.

There were a few that were imported brand new in 98 by a main dealer in Sussex, I have one and looked at another when buying. There are also a few private imports. My own car has full UK history etc..

A TypeR Forum Owners club, like the RB5 owners, would be a good idea, who wants to do it? There is a lot of work involved in running a BBS etc. (although I suppose we could ask the 22B forum if they would allow us a small Section, the cars are pretty much the same mechnically).

Perhaps the best thing would be to start a TypeR thread and keep it updated with hints, Tips and Links etc. We could also arrange (and make an effort to)to park together at all the main meetings.

get a type R - used to have a UK car, they just dont compare!

Ideally you want a MY99 - so it can be (reasonably) cheaply/easily mapped for our fuel and any mods you have done to it!

If 22B and Type-R is the same mechanically, does that mean it would be worth checking out the 22B forum for tuning tips? I just don't know where to begin at the moment.

22b is a 2.2 litre engine. The base car is a Type R version 4, but then changed dramtically (i.e. the shell is practically rebuilt - not too sure on mechanical differences, but I would assume quite a few). The guys on the forum are very technical, so should be able to answer your questions anyway!

Ben,

Have to disagree with you regarding a P1 ...they can be clocked/Stolen just as easily as a Jap Car ...& If you're really relying on the clock for mileage you're probably buying the wrong car! ...& how many people on here have had they're Type R's taken back because they are stolen? ...compared to the dealer suppiled P1 that was 'rolled'?

Better drive is subjective ...& I know which one is the more Track focused car!

Warranty is no longer an issue & you may not be able to get it serviced at a Dealer (what a shame) ...but make sure it's been run on 97/98 + Booster, but id aslo check that for a P1! (do a search for P1's & Type R's going 'pop')

Use th £5K saving for your P1 springs & alloys!

22B was based on an STI4R

Differeent bottom end/clutch , same drive train and intercooler, but bigger turbo.

Wide body panels and different wishbones/wider track.

Have to agree that a V5 or 6 would be the way to go, as the ECU can be remapped. Earlier cars can need a new ECU.

I heared (from a mapper) that the P1 Map is the same as the V5/6, but with the knock sensing turned up. Bit of a cheap fix really! But it does explain why TEK mappers us the standard P1 map as the start point for all 99-on STI's.

I used to have a UK turbo but now have a Type R version 5, the difference is huge.

It's a much more focused car and in the right hands a total weapon.

The flip side is it can take a bit of getting used to. I could jump in my old car and from day one be pretty quick in it but after getting the Type R I nearly crashed it every time I took it out at first. The lack of ABS combined with the DCCD (goodbye understeer) gave me a few moments but I'd never swap back now.

I'd say the only major downside is insurance. Most company's done have a clue what it is, even so-called import specialists. I've just renewed and the number who thought it was a Type UK was starting to annoy me a little. If you over 25 though it can be done and is worth it in the end.

Yeah will be 26 when seriously looking, still think I might be dreaming, and a UK MY99 with PPP will be my best option. Just cant help thinking that this is the time to do it, as I have a new well paid job, and I hate to say it at my age, but am still living at home, so no out goings (cheers to my folks). In my defense, property where I live in pretty much unobtainable to the first time buyer!
