Default Optimax no more.

My only really local Shell garage in Sinfin Derby is reopening as a BP garage next week.

I know there are threads on search regarding BP Ultimate, but I would like to know what everyones' current view is. Should I really drive 10 miles in the wrong direction to fill up with lovely Optimax, or can I trust BP?

MY 99 running about 240hp, 15.5 - 16 psi, no Knock or Lamdalink (that's another conversation).

ThanQ.

I've used ultimate since it came out and have no regrets - smoother running and better mpg. Never used optimax though so can't compare but the claims are the same. (MY98 wagon std spec)

Sinfin? What wrong with the Ockbrook Services just down the A52?

Or there the Shell garage on Sir Frank Whittle Road, or the one down Ashbourne Road...

i used to drive 8 miles to get optimax

TBH Optimax is cheaper than ultimate (once had to pay 96p a litre for BP ultimate) and Optimax is 98.6 ron opposed to 97.

saying that though, i have an import so it makes it matter.

I use BP Ultimate in my 04 wrx ,mainly because the nearest BP garage doesn't have a big turn round of Optimax and with the reports that Optimax go's off I decided to stick with BP Ultimate

theres no shell garage in sinfin, did you mean the one opposite showcase on ring road?

BP Ultimate cost alot more and i dont think its any better than any other super, i use super from esso or the sainsbury garage

I use Optimax because there are 3 Shell garages within 4 miles of my house and another 3 within 10, they're pretty good round these parts.

Tired BP a few times, there didn't seem to be any difference in performance, but there was a significant difference in economy. I do the same journey at least twice a month from my house in Cheshire to Darlington, up the M6 and through the Lakes (the scenic route) . A tank of Optimax will get me there and to the Shell garage in Darlington having done 176 miles - it's not quite to the 1/4 tank mark. I've filled up with BP twice on that journey instead and both times I've got to Darlington and the light has just come on one of them, the other time it was close.

This is a journey that I don't spare the right pedal at any time and I've done it about 20 times in this car. So I can say for sure, it's not as economical in my MY03 SpecC as Optimax.

When i asked a similar question on here a few weeks ago a lot of people said the BP stuff lit up their knocklinks.

I use Esso SUL now as there isn't a Shell garage near by.

Oo Bugger! Got you in the wrong part of Derby

Yeah - you're boned... the only Shell ones near you that I can think of onder2: are too far away bar the one opposite Showcase like you say.

South into Burton you have to go to the St Peters bridge one - or the ones on the far side of Derby from you....

Octane boost?

Try Texaco SUL. I'm not sure of the octane rating but it seems to make my 01 WRX go better than Ultimate or Opitmax.

Shell garages are few and far between around my area so I've only filled up with Optimax two or three times. Some people say that you need to use a couple of tanks before the ecu has adjusted to the higher octane. But I don't believe it, especially as I can feel the difference of Texaco SUL within a few miles!

Had to put BP Ultimate in mine once, used Optimax for all other fill-ups. It ran fine on Ultimate, but the ecconomy was appalling.

On a motorway run I always average over 26, sometimes upto 30, but with BP it did 21MPG!!! Anyone know why?

MY03 PPP.

Mikee, yep, by the Showcase. Esso SUL is soooo... overpriced so I don't like to buy it on principle. They always say 'it's a premium product'. Quite why it is 9 to 10p a litre more is completely stupid, given petrol actually costs 26 to 30p a litre before duty, why should I pay 33% more???

We should boycott them and bring the price down!

At my local Esso the normal UL is 79.9 and the SUL is 81.9

The BP stuff is about 88 pence.

I used to travel 8 miles for optimax, one day I couldn't be arsed and used ultimate at my local BP. Found it to give me more MPG without affecting performance. Haven't used Optimax since.

definately more noise on the KL with BP Ultimate than optimax. It was mapped for opti, so it's not even the 100ron requirement....
