How to tell the age of an import.

My Seatbelt tells me it was manufactured Sept 1996, I originally thought it was a MY96 but it's a MY97 Spec car (smaller turbo, updated interior etc). If it was Aug 96 then it would have been MY96.

the seatbelt tags are a guide, they might have had them in stock for a couple of months which might push a car to the next model year. Do also be aware that some importers will change or remove the front seatbelt tags, but will normally ignore the rear ones so always check them aswell.

I think the dates on the seatbelts are pretty close because the badges are put on them after they are tested in the car which is probably just before they go out.
Could be talking crap though but thats what I read somewhere

All japanese manufacturers operate Kan Ban just in time system for manufacturing which means that large stock levels on parts are never held , therefore the seat belt tags are a good guide as to when the seat belts were manufactured. The time lapse until they are fitted on the track would only be a matter of
a few weeks, but as Branners said, this might make all the difference. some larger Plastic moulded parts are dated with month and year, in the form of calender rings.
