Advice for a Subaru Novice
Hi,
My wife and I had twins 3 weeks ago so I am needing a rocket that I can get kids in if need be. I have a budget of circa 20k and fancied a P1. My local dealer can get one and I have seen numerous in Top Marques for mid teens.
Can any of you guys answer a couple of questions for me;
1/ Running Costs? (Cheaper than M3 I assume)
2/ P1 or New Shape Used STI
3/ Difference between the old and new shape? (Excluding the shape LOL)
4/ Residual Stronger on P1?
Sorry to ask easy questions but Subarus are new to me having only ever driven my pal's standard turbo.
Thanks
SC

Stevie,
Had the same dilema as you a few months back. In the end I went for a used V8 STi over a P1 as its easier to get the kids in and out.
The P1 does look the Dogs bo****ks though as its a 2 door, but finding one that wasnt nearly out of warranty was my problem and considering that the current shape scoobies (V8) were selling for the same price as a used 2 year plus old P1 really sold it for me.

i have run 2 p1s - my current one has 11,000 miles and warranty till jul 05. we have three kids and have just completed our annual trip bristol to manchester airport. Lets put it like this - 10 hours Las Vegas to manchester on an A330 airbus was slightly more comfortable!! But thats the wifes point of view and sharing a back seat in a P1 with 2 kids and a suitcase can't be much fun, especially with a full decat system as well!!
As long as you are ok to compromise they are fine if you have kids. Running costs are ok - nothing horrendous and I have done nearly 60,000 miles in total. Performance is superb, looks far better than most cars, and if you are prepared to suffer a bit of discomfort when fully loaded, there is no problems. However watch the 2 doors - we saw a horrendous accident on the M23 out of Brighton some 3 months back, and you'll never get in a 2 door car again having seen that - you need to take care if you have passengers in the back and drive sensibly.
Car may be up for sale if interested - evo8 beckons

I have one 3 year old and a new nipper on the way. I run an 02 STI and space aint an issue.
1/ Running Costs - probably not much in it. I don't know anyone who buys a scoob caused theyre cheap to run !
2/ P1 or new age:
Whilst a P1 is a stunning car, really nice low mileage examples are less common, though hardly scarce. 2 doors might be an issue.
I'd opt for a new age .... just a personal thing.
3/ New age or classic
You really should drive both. - IMHO the new age is more refined, handles better and has a much better interior. The classic is I believe quicker (unmodded) as it's lighter. Classics are prettier.
4/ Residuals
Not a good point with scoobs - specially 51/02 wrx's etc. P1 will be stronger but depends how long you keep your cars for.
For your budget (up to 20k) you could have a new WRX, an 02 or 03 STI or a really nice P1.
Re wagons - 5 doors is handy, but the boot in the new age is quite spacious.
In summary - use the dealers to drive some cars then draw up a short list and go hunting
Good luck.
