Question 22b everyday car?

Thinking (again ) of chopping the p1 in for a 22b. Haven't decided on whether itll be a uk or grey yet.

Ideally I'd like a UK car with taller final gear and remaining extended warranty, can they be extended year on year with IM after the 3 +2 warranty period?

I understand that parts like wings and bumpers may be difficult in sourcing, but if the engine went pop is it a very long wait and a bill of over 5k?

Its been said the clutch is quite heavy and lasts circa 7k, is there a hardwearing relatively inexpensive alternative, ie, like the standard one I have in my car?

Has anybody any opinions of using the car daily as an only car? Will need the car for 40 round trip commute plus usual everyday faffing about. And insurane, will it be much of a leap?

I bought mine as ab everyday car and it was fine. Once the engine blew i have bought other cars to use everyday in its place.

I am happier that way and it lasts longer and makes it more special to drive each time.

The standard exede clutch isn't heavy, it's just a little digital. It can be replaced by an AP clutch (I have a second hand one with loads of meat on it) which is beautiful and as easy to use as any other clutch I have driven but can handle lots of lbft.

Don't the warranty can be extended year on year, but crucially if you are worried about the difference in gearing for high speed cruising then you are buying the wrong car.

22Bs are now reaching the hand of those who wnat to keep them forever as a classic car, that's why they do still hold their value incredibly well. Its not about the ride comfort or the fuel consumption, its more about the love of the car.

I can see a theme starting here. I used mine (Jap Spec) till the engine went and I'm still waiting for it back after 8 weeks (Subaru UK parts problem). Cost is going to be about £3k for the re-build from API Engines. After its back I'll not be using it for commuting as I want to keep the mileage down and I'm planning on keeping mine for as long as I can. But they are just a Subaru after all, so if you want to use it everyday then use it.

You can put a standard size clutch in but you've also got to swap the flywheel as the 22b comes with a twin plate as standard. A 22b clutch from Subaru UK is £1155+VAT but AP ones (like Adam has) can be had for about £600-700.

Parts prices for bits that are unique to the 22b can be VERY expensive, how does £850 PER wheel sound. So its best not to crash one

Not sure what your insurance is but I'm 34 with full protected no claims and mine is £600 per year with LV.

Personally I'd only look at buying a 22b if you REALLY love the shape, it would be a lot cheaper to buy a STI5/6 Type R and spend the remainder on mods. You'd then have a nice fast car that if you pranged would be easy to fix. Especially true if you want to do track days.

Dave.

nutta555, passwords are normally generated immediately, I will check with admin to see whats going on for you.

what is your usual log in name?

DaveW made a great final point there, and I would tend to agree. I am often afraid to push mine as I wouldn't be happy with the bill if I pranged it. That said I have spare front and rear bumpers, and access to front wings for moulding copies if necessary.

Bubba Po,

All subaru engines have the distinct possibility of throwing a big end, for unknown reasons, the 22B is no more or less likely to suffer this fate.

Question

Just checked the insurance, and its basically the same price, around £1000. Anyone know about the 22b for sale at Stan Palmers? I know its had an engine rebuild, but curiously the rebuild is not warrantied.

And the 64 mileage uk 22b at Just Sports. Apparently this has just had a new engine etc from Subaru.

one advantage of the UK is that it can be insured anywhere.

adrian flux and liverpool victoria wont insure the JDM 22b.

You have the choice of 3 there (just sports) but if you stretch you could get the 555 V limited MY04 JDM car (seen this one in the flesh, very nice )

is this a new policy, because they told me this car wasn't on their records.

Can you PM me any details I could use as an argument against them when I ring them?

Adam FWIW,

I have just taken up insurance as a new policy with L&V on a 2003 WRX STi JDM.

When documents arrived it specifically stated 'IMPORT' in the schedule.

calling them now, their website specifically states they do not insure japanese imports, and that they don't cover mods, yet everyone raves about how mod friendly they are! what's going on?

further to this, it would seem they do have a jap 22b on their system which is 2212cc which is spot on, however they have it down as a 4 door. They are contacting their underwriters and calling me back as it looks like their records are wrong once I told them there is no 4 door 22B of any kind.

There is a chance.

How mod friendly are they? could they cope with a 2.5 engine running 500 plus bhp?

Adam,

My JDM 22b is with LV as well, it is listed on their records. I had no problem changing over from my previous car last August.

From my insurance document (which I happened to have handy);

Details of vehicle registration number ******
It is a Subaru Impreza 22B-STI with an engine size of 2212c.c.
Year 1998

Adam, I was told when sorting my insurance with LV they didnt care what the mods were unless it was the engines capacity......

jesus these people drive me nuts.

I just called back with no record of who it was I originally spoke to. The new woman said they would only quote for what is written on my log book which is a 2-axle rigid body coupe. Not even a mention of the word impreza!

the stupid cow started searching for a subaru two axle rigid body coupe and was surprised when it wasn't there.

I asked her to search for a 22B, but she refused, she couldn't seem to grasp what I was saying, simply because a 2 axle rigid body coupe wasn't on her system, so that was it.

Not happy.

I shall have to unsubscribe to this thread as my thoughts are becoming increasingly more channelled to the "chop my wrx in for a 22b" school of thought.

The 22b that Stan Palmers has 'in the words of the sales guy to an exisiting 22b owner (me)' had a hard life. Quite a few track days, and on its 3rd re-build. Probably still worth a look though at £22.5k, and as its just had a re-build, may just need an ECU to keep it running safely.

ok, finally got through to a bloke who was far more helpful.

it is listed as a four door, Si, you might want to check that as they could try wriggling out of paying come claim time.

Turns out that this car is limited to drivers over the age of 30!

damn it!

will have to stick with privilege.
