Default The Nurburgring - thoughts....

After going to the 'Ring for the first time 6 weekes ago and going again in 2 weeks my opinion of what "a good car is" has dramatically changed.

Who has been to the Ring, what do you drive and what cars surprised you or impressed you on the day??

My conclusion was simple....."BHP means ****" !!!"

Been in my STi and my 205GTi...Enjoyed the 205 the most other than the long up hill sections where its underpowered.

Always amazed by the ability of the local drivers in Golfs and Polo's.

911's are always the ultimate order of the day over there though ...other than M3 CSL's of course

Oh and im going back with Senior AP and Davy boy in under two weeks

Of course power means quick but a lighter, more balanced car will positively w&nk all over any power house.

The quickest cars there on the whole were 215bhp. I won't say what they are but I will say that a balanced car built for that environment was quicker than 90% of other motors.

Would love to have a go someday - if we're talking about the full monty circuit here.

Incidentally - if you need to learn the track, it's going to be in Gran Turismo 4...

The "Nordschleife" which is the North Loop translated. Its 13.8 (ish) miles long, up and down, blind corners, off cambers etc etc. Been there once and found it the best exerience ever.

Ever!!

Where have you been? We've been playing for months on end on Project Gotham Racing on Xbox. Everything from scoobies to Enzo's to GT1's.

And for anybody who thinks the GT1 handles unrealistically well in the game, take a look at this video and you will see if anything it is an underestimation of how a real race car handles the ring. You have to register, and will need broadband, but it's one of the best videos I have ever seen, and makes me understand that I could never be a racing driver.

Don't forget good old fashioned driving ability, I've passengered MattOz in his old Beemer 330 Diesel and we whooped a fair bit of ***. You can't beat a bit of good driving ability and track knowledge for a smoother, faster ride

Would love to go round in a GT3 someday

The most important of them all. If I was in a GT3 (for arguments sake) and Michael Schumacher was in err....a Golf GTI I am confident he would kick my ar$e.

Been around it on a couple of superbikes in years past. Pretty scarey stuff. Porkies and Ferrari's doing you on tight bends and then you find yourself up the back end of an old VW beetle whilst doing a tonne. I even saw a mini moke driven by a mad dutch guy once. I think he spent the same amount of time on two wheels as i did.lol

That's the spirit !!!!!

The place is great. Though I must say, I didn't see any Ferrari's there. People that have Ferrari's tend to prefer rubbing their ***** on them rather than driving the fooocking things.

I did 3 laps in succession. Got my tyres nice and hot.....tyre pressures up to well over 40 I would think just so I could show off on some of the corners by going sideways in a RWD Porker.

Sad - yes

Fun - YES!!!!

Handling and brakes are very important there as well as knowledge. BHP is secondary. I was passed by a VW Bora with suspension mods and HUGE tyres. He wasn't quick on the straights but left me for dead in the twisties

All these scoob tuners on here who pay big bucks for horse power and then stick crappy springs on their cars as a token jesture to handling, have got the balance badly wrong IMHO.

But most who spend big bucks on BHP are more interested in quarter mile times and pub talk as opposed to blasting round the ring (not all)

It's been mentioned many times on here that scoobys have amazing grip but this doesn't equate to a good track car. It's not often that a 4WD rally car is going to be as quick round a track as well set up RWD and possibly FWD car with similar or even less BHP.

All IMHO of course and not wanting to offend anyone

I'd love to go, but it comes down to cost. And not working means it's out of the question at the moment.

I know of a mint 91h 215hp car, 72k miles etc

Handling of these is a different league to a Scoob
