Towing with a 2003 STI UK
I've had a removable tow bar on my 03STI for the last year, and have used it to tow mainly my jet ski...
At the lake yesterday a bloke came up to me and said "Hi mate, I went to buy one of these the other day and the Subaru salesman said I shouldn't tow with it".
To which I said "b0llocks, if that was the case Subaru would not make an STI towbar"
His reply was "well that's what the guy said.... apparently you can blow up the turbo.."
Has anyone had the same information?

Can't really see how towing a jetski can blow up your turbo , If you were to try and tow a tank with it then that might not do it any favours , next they'll tell you not to put more than 3 bags of shopping in the boot

If you check the brochure for the MY03 STi, it gives towing weights, including the nose weight, unbraked weight and braked weight.
Ergo, he's talking b0llocks!
PS My 03STi tows beautifully :-) Only for me it's aeroplanes, not jet-skis :-D

Towing a tailer?
Slightly off topic.
I was thinking of towing with my MY02 Sti and was wondering how it would cope. The reason I ask is that at one of the office's my campany has, is a very steep slope into the underground car park. I really have to "slip" the clutch to get up this slope and there is no way it would do it in reverse. The clutch also stinks the car out.
If I was to tow a loaded trailer, would I have problems pulling away? How about a caravan, or is that just stupid?
Cheers all

I have to agree with Gareth here. My MY02 STI can not get up my Dads steep drive in reverse when the engine is cold without a succession of clutch burns and bog downs. It's not so bad when warmed up though.
I would not tow anything heavy with mine, thats for sure.

Shy tot / Gareth,
My clutch burns a bit when pulling the ski out of the water (steep ramps) but that is the only time.
The best way I have found is not to welly the revs, 1,500-2000 max, even almost tickover... she then just trickles up the slope without clutch burn.
As Thrust said, they tow like a dream, with my mpg going UP when towing, due to the lower revs needed.

I must have done in excess of 9000 miles towing race cars (full car trailer with ff1600 on it plus load of junk) and Jetskis around the country and over to europe with my scooby turbo, no probs todate apart from a stinky clutch every now and again. What a load of old crap the Scooby is a bl00dy excellent tow car loads of torque and 4 wheel drive.
Scooby L where do you ski mate ?

I tow my track car with the MY03 wagon almost weekly, never any probs. Ideally you just need to keep it rolling, and I do tend to stay off boost if poss.

I was down at Bowleaze over the may bank hols, excellent weekend, most skis I've seen at one place.
Normally ski from Lee on Solent, but might go down to Bowleaze during the summer as my bro lives in Dorset.

It's a nice venue... even with the bad press...
It just stays shallow for to long.. I've got cavitation and I am sure it's from there....bloody stones.. but the supercharged seadoo's are a bit prone to sucking them up.
I've never gone to Lee on Solent, I've got a mate who lives in Stubbington so may bring the ski down when I next go down there.
Which ski do you have mate?

Got a Yam XLT 800 at the mo, but I think this winter it may get swapped out for a GP1300r or RXP, waiting to see how the RXPs go over there 1st yr. However, by the time it gets to winter I would have probably changed my mind again. Trouble with jetskis is that they all seem to be a compromise, especially when you get out in the chop on the Solent.
The club a Solent has a good bunch of guys & girls running it, the only prob is that as its a public slip way you can get all sorts of t055ers down there in the summer.
