Just fitted a splitter, and have to say am stunned at the improvement.

Maybe because I wasn't expecting to notice any improvement what so ever, but the increased 'grunt' is definitely there!!

Improvements most noticeable in 3rd and 4th gears (higher wind speed I guess), and between c4500 and 5500 rpm. Feels to be increase in peak boost as it is merely more of a 'shove' rather than changing spooling up, or adding to top end.

Who would have though a small bent peice of metal could do so much!!

Happy chap!! - thanks Micheal!!

Cool

Is this a home made splitter or a commercially available one?

Cheers Gary,

The fivers in the Post,

Doc, i hand made the splitter out of aluminium which was then lightly polished/cleaned and was finally adorned with a design of mine....namely a Japanese Devil face.

I will make the splitters for people but it is not a quick process because i have to be careful not to fracture the metal when it is being formed.

So ,If anyone is interested then could you e-mail me and i will send out a small amount of info and a couple of pictures of the said item.(about the back end of April)

regards Mick f.

Ps. The splitter is easy to fit (ask Gary), and it Definately Will NOT be Expensive.

How big? - width of the intercooler, fits in 'scoop'

How to fit? - dead easy. I am the least able DIY bloke on the planet. I wouldn't know how to change brake disks, I got dealer to fit strut brace etc etc.. It took me less than 10 minutes. Remove under bonnet 'scoop plate', drill four small holes, screw splitter in place, re-fit 'plate'. Start grining

How much? tba!, Mick is working out genuine costs of manufacture - needless to say cheapest upgrade I have ever done to my car (significantly cheaper than £35 strut brace)

How it works? - well I'm no technical wizard! but apparently by ensuring air through the scoop gets to the whole intercooler, rather than just the back half, cooling efficiency is improved. Guy in NZ tested it on the road - without splitter, air temp post-i/c was 40 degress, with splitter this dropped to 35 degress. Same day, same speed, same outside temp etc etc. so lower temp, higher boost(?) Hence benefits are more noticble in 3rd and 4th (and 5th I would think, but thats 120mph+) as at lower speed air flow not at fast!!...and thus why the gains won't show up on a rolling road.

Hope that helps!?!?

Question

Hmm interesting.

Gary et al are you sure that you noticed a big difference? Or just think that the mod did improve things...

Sorry to be a sceptic, but about a year ago I was playing about with a secondary spilter and intercooler water spray, both of which did'nt make a noticable difference. I've recently fitted a boost gauge and running the car with and without the splitter I've noticed no change in boost (peaks at 15psi over boost in 4th and 5th holds 13). The ultimate test will come when I run some tests with some temperature tell tales on the inercooler to see what temperature changes it makes (Paul W have you got hold of these yet?).

If anyone here is a DIY fan, and hasn't seen my design already check out Steve Breen's site at:

Tim have e-mailed you.

Nice oar !!!!! Lol

Right folks listen carefully......the design i used was based upon tim's original design.(With a few minor tweeks)
There is no intention to cause offence to Tim by this as it was only intended as a one off but as usual things get out of hand by interest generated.
I will produce splitters only if Tim is not offended by this.
The second one i produced was because Gary C was not confident in producing the splitter himself(sorry gary !!).

I have been honest about this as i believe it is the best policy and that credit should be given where it is due.

m.
Ps Tim the design was not Poor so don't even say it was. IMHO excellent !! so there!

None taken Mike

I'm just worried when people think I had a good idea, and beleive it works when I've not convinced myself ...

Anyway it wasn't my idea as such, the end design and how to make is mine, but the idea came from Peter McAlpine, and he makes and sells a vey nice Carbon Fiber scoop which has been extensively tested, unlike mine, yet...

Mick - Not 'comfortable' doing anything more technical than filling washer bottle!!!

Tim - no doubt about the increase in 'grunt'. There is a definite improvement between 4500 and 5500 ( I have a MY99 with PPP, maybe that increases the benefit??) - even my wife noticed it without realising I had fitted anything. Will try and find the website of the guy in NZ who measured the airflow etc. Mick has also had 17psi (on standard UK car) which he can only out down to improvements from splitter. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't pay £150 to get these improvements, as they are strictly speaking only noticable above legal speed limits - but there are noticable 'on track' and certainly worth the money. - I know people who have spent more on a stuffed 'scooby doo' doll for their parcel shelf!!!!!

hi all,
the 17 psi was also on a cold day ,but dry and that is a peak figure the hold was at 15Psi , the upshot is that don't expect miracles from the scoop i think that it helps with the efficiency of the intercooler though it is dependant on the weather as to how much improvements are gained.

the site you are after is:

Got mine Saturday morning all wraped up nicely. I had to chase the postman up the road when he rang on the doorbell but didnt get an answer and pushed one of those collection notes thru the door. Fitted it right away in about 15 mins start to finish ( I know Im sad ) and took her out for a spin. I noticed slightly better pulling from about 50 mph onwards so I am well pleased. I know it does its job because I now have to pluck the bugs out of the front and the back of the cooler instead of just the back. Good job Mick. Well pleased.

Regards
Stu

I made my own from the drawing on the IWOC site, and it was a doddle to make. I took me about twenty minutes to mark out, cut and bend. It then took about half an hour of removing the scoop and gentle manipulating of the splitter to make it fit correctly. The power seems slightly smoother but what bhp gains there are i'm not sure, I think a careful dyno session is needed with and without the splitter.

Just to add my 2p for what it's worth.

Many thanks Michael for the splitter. After fitting which took a bit longer than expected....becsuse I don't read instructions first!!!!!

Any difference, well people noticed a difference in the car when they weren't told that I had made any changes so yes it does work. How much of a difference who knows, but for the cost well worth it (Do I get a fiver too ). I have also noticed a definite improvement in fuel consumption around 3-4 mpg (have reverted to SUL at same time admittedly)
Many Thanks once again Michael

I too have a splitter from MF. It definately makes a difference at higher speeds. Doesn't cost much and very easy to fit. I can't see much point in NOT getting one!

Yep, it definetely makes a difference and comments from a well known Scooby tuning company (who fitted it for me as i am too crap!)

"...lot of thought gone into this"
"...Instructions are the amongst the best seen for subaru tuning equipment"
".....perfect fit"

<Blushes>

Your all too Kind (hope you don't mind but i would like to copy and use your comments for future Pr.)

MARK F..... Don't waste your money on a RR power run..... (You can't get the fans to provide enough airflow !!)

and thats not from me but it was gleaned off the web from an Aussie site (they came up with the idea - i just looked at it and gave it a gentle shove.)

Just to let you know ,the first one i made was off the iwoc site (easy 20 mins ,only if you did metalwork at school. Dead easy to fit though,i concede that).
The ones i now make take about 1.25 hours- 2 hours to do as they are larger and are sealed to prevent air escaping round the sides.

i leave the rest for others to make up their minds.

mike f.

Ps. go to new products and look back to around 19th June.
