is been said that certain imported cars with no space for standad ones can have them but i seen lots of uk spec japanese cars with them not to mention BOTH uk & japanese spec subaru impreza's which i always see. i even see cars like ford escorts, fiestas & lotus elise & some other european cars with these front plates.

You're risking a fine of upto £1000 (usually £30) and confiscation of the plate. All the details can be found here and although it doesn't state an actual plate dimension, all the other measurements for letter size and spacing (including margins) pretty much cover it.
Many people chance it, and get away with it, and I do agree they look good on the front, but I wouldn't want to draw any unnecessary attention to my vehicle personally. The staandard excuse is "show plates, sorry I forgot to change them" and have some legal ones in the boot. It might get you off, but it might not. I believe Yorkshire plods have a bee in their bonnet over this ATM

I think the plate on the Lexus in the link is OTT as the characters look to be too small.
My understanding is that it is not the size of the plate that matters per se, but that the soze and spacing of the characters are correct. As long as the letters and numbers are the right size, with the right spacing between then and the legal minimum border around them, can the plate not be any size (in theory)?
Of course, with a standard plate with the minimum legal spacing it probably wouldn't look much different - but with a shorter private number it should look ok.
As I said, this is my understanding so I could very well (most likely lol) be wrong!

John you are right.
For instance the below plate is legal, although it looks too small. The characters, spacing and borders are all correct, however as it's a 5 digit plate it looks a lot smaller.

Hi mate
Got mine from fancy plate, took a million years to turn up but looks nice.
I had police look at it as they drive by but do nothing but then ive got it with normal spacing and the NI style lettering that came with the car (it was from NI)
Hope that helps
Johnny

have a few looks from the plod, but so far no pulls or producers
got it made up at a local vinyl stickers makers, made whatever size or style i wanted, mounted it on a normal sized no. plate and i just cut and shaped it at work to what i wanted.
front of the car looks crap when i have to put the normal one back on for MOT time

I was told by a number plate manufacturer to-day that a number plate is illegal to use on the road if it doesn't have the correct BS (british standard number) embossed in it.

This is mine below
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/...9/b49ee20c.jpg
Was stopped for it once but the copper just warned me and didn't even tell me to change it.
Have been stopped for other reasons and the copper has walked around the front to read the Reg No and ignored the illegal plate and the laser jammers on either side.
Like other people have said its the back they are more concerned about.

It not the size of the plate that bothers Plod but more the refashioning of the characters, style and spacing so as to deliberately distort the real registration mark into something that is shouldn't be.

I got pulled on Sat in wales !!!! for this plate
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=4317148&outx=482&oq=0
He said, get it changed, positioned in its correct place with the correct spacing using the correct material, I felt quite honoured at being pulled as on the stretch of road i was on there were no less than 8 police vehicles , All that for Me
