aaargh! blooming flies
Went down to bournemouth for the day today, and on the way back it started to rain - or so it sounded. Turned out to be insects. Lots of insects. Most wouldn't even come off with the wiper blades. I had to stop once to wipe them off at a service station, but even after that they started off again.
Here are a couple of pics - windscreen isn't that good a pic, but it was really streaked up.
Hows best to get rid of them? I just filled up a bucket with washing liquid (car type) and washed them off. But I had to throw away the towel, as it was infested.
Is there anything disposable you can use? kitched towel, whatever?

Anyone would think this was a new problem Unfortunately flies arrived on this earth long before the motor car. However I do have a great deal of sympathy with you all. There IS nothing worse than spending the whole of a morning cleaning and polishing our pride and joy anly for it to be splattered with the morons of the insect world. The worst culprits in my opinion are 1. Greenflies in May 2. Those long legged black pieces of ****e that hover over the road, (the flies world equivalent of the suicide bomber). 3. Bumble bees: not often a hit, but when they do it nearly takes the windscreen out. The easiest way to get them off is with a Halfords bug sponge soaked in soapy water. Its basically a plain sponge with a cotton netting encasing it. It kind on the paintwork but abrasive enough to wipe the critters off.

bug sponge, roger.
Bluto, it might not be a new thing, but its definitely the first time I've had it this bad. It is my first summer in an Impreza, but my speeds are about the same as in my old black BMW (70-80 motorway cruising), and this was my first 'bug shower'. It did seem like they'd all just spawned (or whatever flies do)

Can anyone explain why if you're travelling fast i.e. 70mph+ you get peppered with bugs but if you're driving slow 40mph or less than you get no bugs?? Is it the bugs reaction time?

cleaned my this afternoon, went to the girlfireinds tonite and had to wipe the front end down again with a damp cloth as it was splatterd beyond belief

sounds plausible. at 40 less air resistance fly just skims over the car. 70 plus higher air resistance fly doesnt stand a chance. (what am i talking about!)
anybody study aerodynamics?

I use the high pressure washer first, then the sponge and then as a last resort, the bug spray remover (from Halfrauds) the black bottle with green markings, it's pretty good (just make sure your not to liberal with the stuff or you'll get white splodges all over your freshly shined motor)

I've always used one of those cleaning pads you use for washing up, the green scourer with the foam sponge back. They dont scratch the glass, but wouldn't use them on the paint.

The bugs we have here are nothing compaired to what we had to put up with in Belize. We were traveling up the road one night from the airport in an open top lorry me and my mate in the back when he got hit with this flying beetle. It was about 2" long and as hard as a stone. They used to fly into the rooms and into the celing fans.

if you wax your car and not just polish it, all you need do is wet the flies and wipe them off. IF you get a stubborn one wet a flannel and leave it on the beastie for a few minutes and it should come off easy enough.
Ive used swissol and iauto, havent waxed the audi yet and im not looking forward to cleaning it its covered.
I think prevention is better than cure, using bug spray and bug cloths will eventually overtime dull or damage paint.
