Prices of MY99 and MY00
As you may know Im gonna buy a impreza turbo. I was thinking of spending £10k for a MY00 but after more than a month of searching (want one with air con. so im finding it hard work) Im starting to look at MY99 but iv just looked up the prices of them and parkers guide says they are worth about £7500 where a MY00 is worth about £10k.
Why is there such a large price difference in the space of one year?
If I buy a MY00 it looks like im gonna loose £2500 in one year.
Looked at the price of a 1998 they are about £6775.

From SIDC FAQ: Differences between MY99 and MY00
The most obvious changes are the wheel design. Out went the much loved curved 5 spoke design, to be replaced with a 6 slender spoke design. Opinions on the new wheel style are generally mixed, but more owners prefer the older 5 spoke design to the newer one.
Other changes include colour coded mirrors and door handles, adjustable intermittent wiper speeds, remote central locking (was already fitted prior to delivery for UK cars with the alarm system), a metallic fascia, map reading lights and a new gear ****.
The very popular Dark Blue Mica colour was replaced by a slightly lighted Deep Blue Mica, and a new Red Mica Metallic colour was added to the range.

i can't work out the price's of subaru impreza's at all! i got my MY98 wrx 3 momths ago for £8800 with 52000 miles from a car dealer with a full service history and since then i haven't seen one anywhere near that price and now the same dealer has a MY97 wrx sti for £10000!!!

As always, this depends on where you are buying from. I bought my last 99MY, DBM, Aircon for £10500 privately 2 years ago and traded it exactly a year later for £8500. The car was then advertised by the dealer at £10995. Confused ?
Basically, if you can buy privately and if necessary pay for an HPI check, inspection and get one with some extended Subaru used warranty, it will clearly cost you a lot less than a dealer car where a 20/25% margin is common.
It is a buyer's market. Take your time and don't assume that you have to pay top dollar at a Subaru dealer to get the best car. Keep looking

Agree with that. Ive had my scooby almost 2 years now and I think I've used the aircon because I wanted it once or maybe twice. I've switched it on a few more times but that was just to give it some use now and then to prevent it breaking down. Turns out now I think it's buggered and needs re-gassed or other maintenance, it's more of a hassle than a benefit - personally I don't care that it's not working but I'll need to get it sorted if I decide to sell up.

In contrast to the last comments, I think the air-con is brilliant, and it's well worth seeking out a car with it on.
You've only got to get caught in a traffic on even a warm day to be able to appreciate the benefits.
Another great feature is how quickly it will de-mist and dry the inside of the car on damp wet days.

Fine if there is a car with AirCon about - but I certainly wouldn't rule out cars without it!
I've had AirCon on a few cars now and I can HONESTLY say that I have owned my non-AirCon Impreza for 4 years and have wished it had AirCon probably 4 times (last year!) ...... its just not worth the power drain and extra fuel consumption!

I got my MY99 December 03, paid £9995, 28,000 miles, FSSH with all bills etc, Aircon, 6 cd, 12 months T&T, 2 year warranty, free mots for life!
I hadnt even been looking for one at the time, just happened to drive past a Citroen dealer and there she was
I reckon you should get one with a/c, makes life much nicer on warm days plus it will help resale if its got all the toys

I agree, if you saw a really mint non air-con car you'd be silly to pass it by because of that alone. But it is nice to have all the same.
The air-con takes no power whilst it is not switchced on ( i.e the compressor is not engaged ), and in real terms I really doubt you would ever notice much economy difference when it's turned on with a scoob.
Don't know why, but the only a/c equipped cars I've had where I've noticed any real difference in fuel consumption when it's been turned on have been bigger cars with bigger engines, like BMW 735i for example.
It's just nice to travel in the summer with the windows shut on the motorway ( quieter and more comfortable ) and get out of the car feeling fresh instead of hot and sticky.

They always seem to sell them OK.

I see what you guys are saying about not having air con but just ti have it since it seems to get warmer than a few years ago.
Iv passed loads of cars without a/c but iv been looking this long now. i might just keep at it.
Seen a few but im always to late to buy it. they go quick with a/c

Fuel economy wise, isn't air con better than having a window open once u start moving? can't say i notice any difference with it switched on or off though..
Ray_li if u really have to have a car with air con, if u get one from a dealer just get them to add it. When I was looking for one a while back it was one of the things they offered to throw in cos I specifically wanted one with air con.
Or if you buy private, if they still do the kits u can add it anyway?

The maf is only an issue, really, if you don't have prior knowledge of them and subsequently ignore the signs of an impending failure. My MY00 has done 50k now, still on the original maf, and a 2nd hand AE800 or 801 ecu from an earlier model is a direct and cheap replacement for the original (crap ) ecu.
#27
Daz34 is sadly mis informed. The MY00 can come with the green dot MAF as std which IIRC is the later and better MAF. Don't let him scare monger you into not buying a MY00. The ECU is emission friendly but not as powerful as the MY99. An AE801 will go better for £75.

Whats a fair price for a 2001 51 reg WRX. Imported from Holland just over 17k miles with Subaru full service history. I have advertised mine for a month on Autotrader and had little or no interest except from dealers offering £11k. I have seen the same year and usually higer milage then sold by these dealers for £13k - £14k. They must know they can sell at higher price if prepared to offer me this but don't understand why people would not buy privately and both of us are better off. I have had it in at 12,250 hoping to get around £12
