Question This months Evo Magazine

Hello,

Did anyone else read the bit in EVO magazine about the Porsche 911 braking system involving composite brake discs which will apparrently last 300,000 km's?!?

The upgrade costs £6000 when you order the car but some owners after a trackday or 10 are finding they don't last as long and are cracking etc due to poor cooling.

However, the laugh is the cost of new pads and discs.

To buy a new set of four discs and pads costs....

wait for it...........

in excess of...........

quote...............

£27,000

WTF - for a set of pads and discs.

They better be friggin good!!!

A USA Porsche specialist has recommended owners take them off, fit standard steel otr iron Brembo discs and put them back on when the time comes to sell the car.

Any comments?

Is it just me who is amazed at £27,000?

Actually Porsche have reduced the price of the components now (still expensive though). You can get exchange discs (new ceramic discs with reconditioned bells) for around £2500. So £5000 for a set of front discs. Still a hell of a lot of money, but seeing that Porsche will charge you £1000 for a set of steel front discs, you've only got to make them last 4 or 5 times longer to have similar costs per mile.

It seems to be that the people affected are mostly high mileage track users, who would reasonably be expecting to replace brake components at fairly regular intervals. At least the pricing means that the replacement bills are more spread out (although a bigger hit) and not quite so insane as they were.

More details on Stuggart 9s - where most of this info came from.

Yes got the Scooby article twice in Evo.
Seems the Long Term test Section is missing shame I like to read this section.
Are ALL the copies like this?
