You can safely run an MY01 WRX on unleaded, but to get the most performance/mpg then super unleaded/optimax is recommended (it works out about the same price as you do get better mpg )

Lol, used to running on fumes trying to find a Shell as I owned an import STi V3 for 4 years!!, I am just gonna have to see If I can change my username without losing my post records!

Don't know if a MY01 is the same but a MY03 UK WRX has 'minimum of RON98' written on the fuel filler.... so that means Optimax or nothing.
Can't understand why there is any confusion on this with WRX owners, with people asking can they run it on std unleaded - as it's written on the car to use RON98!

Do you really think they would produce a car for the masses and ensure it would only be able to run on one companies fuel?
Read the handbook, it will state a MINIMUM of 95 ron as this will be the MINIMUM requirement in europe.

To quote a MY03 WRX
on filler cap
'use Unleaded 98RON gasoline only'
Sounds fairly clear to me...
-------------------------
page 7-2 of handbook, Fuel requirements;
Turbo models.
Your engine is designed to provide satisfactory performance by using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating 98 OR HIGHER. This octane is the research octane number.
If unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 98 or higher is not available, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 95 or higher may be used.
Use of gasoline with an octane rating lower than 98 will detract from engine performance and driveability.
------------------
Sounds fairly clear to me, use 98RON or higher for general usage, if your stuck and have no choice use RON95.
Run your scooby on RON95 all the time - i don't think so.

Ran my uk leggy turbo for 6 years. Sold it with 110,000 miles on. Never used anything but 95 ron. Never done it any harm and that said use sul on the cap.
Now my JDM V5. Thats a different story. Always sul or opti + booster.

Not saying that if you use RON95 you'll damage your car, but if your driving a scooby to 'enjoy' the engine's power/characteristics, why drive it on a fuel that's going to cut back on what it gives?

I was optimax, until my bottle runs out trying to find a shell garage in bandit country, then will put a small amount of esso SUL in to get me to the first known shell garage.

Bob Rawle told me BP ultimate is 96-97 RON. An EVO owner he was mapping filled up on the stuff before going to him for a map, detted like a loony thing.
Optimax for me but I'm lucky there's a few shell garages on the way home,

UK cars are mapped to use 95 RON, so there is no problem running normal unleaded. That said, I have always run my car on SUL or Optimax - there is a noticable difference. Incidently, I found a bottle of NF octane booster while clearing out a cupboard this afternoon - tipped in straight in the tank. Bloody car was flying - it really does make a difference
