There are plus points from both sides but here is a few of them.
Import:
Better Spec
Faster
possibly in better condition down to our rain in UK
UK Spec:
UK parts so no sending off for a mystery part number etc
configured for UK petrol
Personally i have a JDM STi7 and it was tuned by some good old parts from japan.
Here:
http://www.jprova.co.jp/
and here:
http://www.syms.jp/index.html
But you can easily do the same and tune a UK version so its up to you.
I would say if you can find one in good condition with history then don't let import or not decide you but choose on the condition and quality of whats on offer.

The JDM cars are a far better spec and more attractive, but the fuel issue puts me off them. I would only buy a JDM car direct from Japan (i.e. 1st UK owner) and get it re-mapped for UK grade fuel. You'd loose performance, but should still be quicker than UK spec cars and there'd be far lase chance of you engine going pop!

remember EU imports as well as JDM
Not all the imports are Jap...
My Eu Import was 2 Grand cheeper than the UK car new, giving me some spare cash to upgrade the wheels & stereo!!
